Sarah Merrill Obituary

Marblehead, OH - Family is saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Sarah "Sally" Anne Stueber Bishop Merrill, MS, PhD, 73, of Harlingen, TX on Thursday March 23rd in Marblehead, OH. Sally was born in Cleveland, OH to Margot Anne Krueger Stueber and Dr. Paul Jacob Stueber Jr., MD. She is predeceased by her parents and her first ex-husband John Keith Bishop. She is survived by sons Justin Aaron Bishop of Albany, NY and Noah Merrill of Putney, VT; grandson Jonathon E Bishop-Heshmat of Albany, NY; brothers Frederick George Stueber of Cleveland Heights, OH (Elizabeth) and David Stewart Stueber of London, England; sister Cynthia Heath Herndon of Kelleys Island, OH (Charles); nieces Blair Herndon Hayes of Columbus, OH (Seth) and Katherine Anne Stueber of Denver, CO; nephews Christopher James Stueber of Boston, MA, David Fitzgerald Stueber of Cleveland, OH, Philip Herbert Stueber of Stamford, CT, and Andrew Williamson Stueber of Wrentham, MA; second ex-husband Gary Lane Smith Merrill of Valparaiso, IN; and longtime companion Volker Imschweiler of Harlingen, TX.

Sally graduated from Laurel School for Girls in 1967, Skidmore College in 1971 (B.A.), Georgetown University in 1973 (MS Linguistics), and SUNY Albany in 1987 (PhD Philosophy). She was a professor and educator of all grade levels and taught at numerous colleges and universities including Kansas State University, Purdue University Calumet, and Texas State Technical College. She lectured for over four decades in Philosophy, Ethics, Religion, Feminist Theory, and the Humanities, authored the book, "Defining Personhood: Toward the Ethics of Quality in Clinical Care", and contributed to and edited numerous professional articles and textbook chapters. A significant project of many years, a casebook on construction ethics, remains unpublished.

Sally was active in support of social, political, and environmental causes throughout her life. She served on the boards of several academic and professional bodies, and was active in Quaker (and in later years, Presbyterian) churches and organizations. She loved to sing and play the piano, with a wide ranging appreciation for music. She engaged passionately in efforts toward the protection of native ecosystems in the regions she called home-in the woodlands and mountains of New York, in the Flint Hills of Kansas, in the dunes of Northwest Indiana, and in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

She will be remembered as a teacher, scholar, ethicist, advocate, naturalist, friend, sister, and loving mother.

Sally was my good friend of 20 + years. I was impressed by her passion for helping others, such as in the Tias and Abuelas group. She was dedicated to saving our local ecosystems and addressing climate change. Her enthusiasm and spirit were infectious. I will miss her.
