Edward Gates Obituary

Edward John ("Ed") Gates passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025 surrounded by his loving family after a short battle with congestive heart failure and renal failure . He was 85.

Born on January 9, 1940 to John Gates and Agnes Hrimnak Gates in Warren, Ohio, Ed was a man of integrity, humor and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Those who knew him regularly would comment "Ed is such a good guy."

A graduate of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, Ed served honorably in the U.S. Army and the National Guard before embarking on a 38-year career as a salesman for International Harvester, which later became Navistar International, where his personable nature and love for people were well known. Ed met and married the love of his life, Nancy Wolfe Gates while still at Ohio University. Ed and Nancy built a beautiful life together for over 63 years.

To his children, Russell John Gates and Pamela Marie Gates O'Quinn, he was a parent, a hero, a mentor and a friend, always ready with a good story, a helping hand, or a wise word. Ed taught them the value of a strong work ethic, a good laugh and the simple joy of being with friends and family.

His legacy lives on through his family and the countless lives he touched as a coach, the booster club president, and a community volunteer. His generous spirit was well known to his fellow volunteers at the Venice Historical Society, the Venice Train Depot and Patriot Plaza.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, daughter, Pam and her husband, Bill O'Quinn, his granddaughters, Lorene and Cassidy, his brother and sister-in-law, Len and Marcy Gates, his sister-in-law, Honora Wolfe, her husband, Bob Flaws, his brother-in-law, John Czopor and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Pat, and his son, Russell.

A Memorial Service will be held in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Venice Historical Society or to the Patterson Foundation, Sarasota, Florida, causes that were close to Ed's heart.
