Jean Chapman Obituary

Jean Tabor Chapman, 92, of Venice, Florida died peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024.

Jean was born in Bennington, Vermont, and lived at Village on the Isle (VOTI) in Venice for the past 23 years. She spent most of her life in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and the family camp in Sunderland, Vermont.

Jean grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island, and was the only child of Lester and Elizabeth Tabor. She graduated from The University of Rhode Island in 1953. She married John Lawrence Chapman "Coach" in 1953 and lived a full life as a homemaker for her children, a reading consultant for the Coventry, Connecticut school system, and finally in retirement as a member of many important VOTI boards and committees.

Jean and Coach loved to travel and spent a fair amount of time on cruises. She was an active bridge player, and basket maker, and was the family matriarch.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, John Lawrence Chapman. She is survived by her daughter, Wendy C. Bergren (Frank) of Wakefield, Rhode Island, John L. Chapman Jr. of Greensboro, North Carolina, and James R. Chapman (Diane) of Richmond, Virginia, as well as nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

There will be a Celebration of Her Life at Village on the Isle in November 2024. Information will be forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, Jean wanted contributions to be sent to the Village on the Isle Foundation: 920 Tamiami Trail South, Venice, FL 34285.

Fond memories! Jean Chapman and Coach became our family. They both took John and I under their "wing" as soon as we arrived in Storrs. Fun and laughter always when we visited Coach and Jean in Wickford and Sarasota. A stop with "The Peters" in Hershey as they headed to FL was always a highlight for us. I will miss your mom!
Wendy, Kip, Jim and your families you have our deepest condolences on the precious loss of your mom.

Mimi, you are so loved. You and Coach always felt like family and we are so grateful for the memories we´ve shared with you over decades. I especially loved when you came back from the beach from your early morning walks with the most perfect sand dollars, playing games around the table as the sun was setting in the evenings in Sarasota and your yearly visits to Hershey. You will always be a part of us. We will never forget you.

Jean had been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 2/5/1988. She served as a Vice Regent of her Rhode Island Chapter General Nathanael Greene-Pettaquamscutt. Her patriot ancestor was Christopher Robinson Sr. (1727-1807) of South Kingstown RI. Jean transferred to the Myakka Chapter on 12/12/2010. Jean's passing will be recognized at both the Florida State Annual meeting in March 2025 and at the Myakka Chapter next annual meeting in April 2025. She will be missed by all the daughters of the Myakka Chapter and a genealogical book as recommended will be donated on her behalf to the Venice Public Library. If you are a family member, please email me at [email protected] with details on her Celebration of Life in November 2024 and I will let her fellow Chapter daughters know. Again condolences from all the Myakka Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. Jackie Urschel, Regent, Myakka Chapter NSDAR
