Alvina "Al" Spaur passed on Dec. 20, 2006.
She was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Turtle River, Minn., to William Thomas Wynne and Anna Rose Cetnor Wynne. The family moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where Anna Rose died in 1927. Alvina was only 10 years old. Her father was unable to care for Alvina and her two younger brothers, Emil and Harry. The children were raised separately by various relatives. At age 18, Alvina and a girlfriend traveled to California, selling magazine subscriptions to pay their way.
In Los Angeles, Alvina met Owen Delton Spaur and married him on Jan. 28, 1940. They had seven children and divorced in 1961. She worked at Aircraft Tool during World War II, as many Rosie the Riveters did. She worked many jobs to make ends meet. Mom sent all her children through parochial schools. Alvina retired from TWA in 1978. Mom moved to Ojai in 1985 to be near her children.
Alvina was an avid gardener. She enjoyed traveling, decorating, dancing, sewing, ceramics and painting. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Alvina lived the past five years at Ojai Valley Community Hospital Skilled Nursing Center.
Alvina was preceded in death by her brother Emil Wynne; half sister Dolores Rarhman and half brother Ronald Wynne.
Alvina is survived by her brother Harry Wynne; half brothers Ray, Jerome and Elroy Wynne; children, Charles D. Spaur, JoAnn Bennett, Jeanne M. Briganti, Michael R. Spaur, Judy A. Whittington, Thomas W. Spaur and Sandra Buss; daughters-in-law, Ligia and Cindy; sons-in-law, Chuck, Stan and Jimmy; grandchildren, Gina, Lisa, Reina, Jennifer, Brook, Paul, Sylvia, Tanya, Katie, Kristina, Jeremy, Robert, Amy and Sarah; great-grandchildren, Crystal, Sydney, Jered, Tara, Rory, Krysthal, Jordan, Cameron, Sofia, Audrey, Emmett and Sierra Luz. All of them live in California. She also is survived by her many cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Jan. 26, 2007, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Ojai. Officiating priest will be the Rev. Michael McFadden, O.S.A.
