Andrew Higgins Obituary

Andrew John Higgins

Ventura - Andrew John Higgins died at his home in Ventura early Friday, April 24, 2020.

Andy was born in Casper, Wyoming on July 17, 1954 to Fred and Agnes Higgins. In 1955 he moved to Ventura, where he lived most of his life. He attended Our Lady of Assumption Elementary School and graduated from Saint Bonaventure High School in 1972. He attended Ventura College before entering the Army in 1973. Upon his return from service in 1975, he began his career at the Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme.

For a brief time, Andy worked as a government contractor in San Diego. An animal lover, he had a membership in The San Diego Zoo, and spent many happy hours there. Andy was a lifelong Dodger fan.

It was at the base that Andy met his wife Maricela in the 1980's. The two were married in Las Vegas on February 16, 1997. Together they raised their daughter, Olivia, whom Andy loved dearly. Olivia shared many laughs with her dad, along with an appreciation of Beatles music. In recent years Andy and Maricela spent many good times together on extended trips to Mexico, enjoying the culture, the people and of course, the food!

Upon his retirement in 2014, Andy began his very favorite job - being "Papa" to his three granddaughters. He was an ever-present and loving grandfather. From the beginning he took part in their care, feeding, babysitting, and cuddling. He played with and read to them often. In return they brought him so much pride and happiness.

Andy was a loving son, and a dear brother to his siblings. He shared his unique wit and warm smile with all he met. He and his brothers and sisters had a special bond, and they stayed close throughout his lifetime. He will also be missed by his many cherished friends.

Andy is preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Lee, brother Tom, and brother-in-law Jim Krall.

Survivors include his wife, Maricela, daughter Olivia (Derrick) Clune, granddaughters Mya, Eva and Everly Clune, stepsons Chris Echeverria and Erik Hayes, his brother Mick (Ellen) Higgins, sisters Kathleen Nigh, Laura Krall, and Molly (Bill) LaChance, sister-in-law Phyllis Higgins, and cousin Cordell Goode, along with numerous nieces, nephews and family members.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. A celebration of Andy's life will be held when large gatherings are once again permitted. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to The American Diabetes Association.
