Carolyn was born in San Francisco, CA on May 20. She graduated from Berkeley High School, attended Mills College for a year, then transferred to the College of the Pacific where she earned her BA degree in 1959. Later she earned her Special Education Certificate from University of Cincinnati 1990.
Carolyn married Laurence Edward Berry on September 27, 1959 and they were married for 37 years. She taught kindergarten at Edwards Air Force Base in California and later was a substitute teacher in Greenville, NC and Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a Special Education Teacher in Camarillo following Larry's and her return to California. She loved to sew, knit, work on puzzles, swim, attend summer camps, read, teach about other cultures. She was a generous patron of her church, the Arts and the Camarillo library. She traveled the world, which she did extensively after her husband passed away. Most of all she loved spending time with family. Carolyn was very active in American Field Service (AFS) for many years. She and her husband hosted numerous students from all over the world and helped place them with local families. It truly was her passion!!
Carolyn is survived by her children Douglas and Teri Norris-Berry, Kenneth and Amy Berry, Edward and Mitch Sylves-Berry, Kathryn and Jeff Gritz; her sisters Marty Meyer, Sara Anne Person, and Ginger Smith; and her grandchildren Alexander, Andrew, and Arthur Berry, Emma and Sophie Sylves-Berry.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Laurence Berry in1996, her parents, Lawrence and Virginia Henderson, and her brothers, Lee and Bruce Henderson.
A memorial will be held at 4pm, Friday September 2, 2016 at the Camarillo United Methodist Church 291 Anacapa Drive Camarillo, CA 93010, (805) 482-4312 with reception and appetizers to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the local chapter of AFS for local hosting families: Pleasant Valley AFS Chapter Treasurer, 115 Valley Vista Drive, Camarillo, CA 93012.
