It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Daniel Grajeda, loving husband, son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend. Despite the fact that he was a non-smoker and very health conscious, Daniel died from lung cancer on August 1, 2009, with his family and friends by his side.
He was born in San Gabriel, California on May 27, 1946 to Ramon and Anita Grajeda. When he was called to serve in Vietnam, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After his discharge, he graduated with a B.A. in history from Cal State LA. He lived in San Francisco and eventually went to work for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier in Ventura until his retirement in 2006.
Daniel is survived by his wife Leliet, brother Ramon, sisters Carmen, Anita, Rosa and Connie, his 91-year-old Aunt Dora, four nephews, five nieces, four great nieces, and stepson Dylan.
Daniel was known to those who loved him as a gentleman and a gentle man. He was intelligent, honest, modest, kind. He was a voracious reader, played the guitar, and was an avid sports fan. As a young man in San Gabriel, he played basketball, baseball and ran track; later he became a passionate golfer, but continued following all sports and cheering for his beloved Lakers and Angels. He also enjoyed the beach and a variety of music. Although he was proud of his military service, Daniel strongly advocated world peace and justice through non-violence. He earned the respect and gratitude of his coworkers for the many years he dedicated to being their union shop steward. He spoke softly but was a tough negotiator.
He was also devoted to the hundreds of Ventura residents who lived on his mail route. During the twenty plus years he walked that mid-town neighborhood, he established warm, enduring friendships with the people who greeted him every day. He valued the wonderful relationships he had with his family and longtime friends, as well as the camaraderie of newer friends, like those in his water aerobics class. Daniel's zest for life, wry sense of humor, and caring heart will be with us always.
A memorial celebration will be held at the Olivas Adobe, 4200 Olivas Park Drive, Ventura, at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16.

I lived at 418 S. Dos Caminos for twenty years and Dan was the letter carrier I always hit it off with the best. We talked Lakers, other sports and had a mutual friend that worked with him in the early to mid 1980s. A great guy, soft spoken and always had a point. My condolences to his wife and the entire family.
