Ian Macfarlane Obituary

Ian Charles Macfarlane -- loving husband and proud father -- passed away after a short battle with cancer on June 28, 2012, his wife and two daughters by his side. He was 67 years old.

Born in Tarrytown, N.Y., Ian spent most of his life in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, before retiring with his wife (and best friend) Wendy to Arizona in 2010. Ian earned a Masters Degree in Geology at University of California, Davis. After graduation he began his career in Geology and Environmental Sciences working for several notable companies, including Dames and Moore and McClelland Engineers, before starting his own business in Ventura.

Ian founded Applied Environmental Technologies (AET) in 1989 with Emanuel Pedram and Harry Finney. AET became an industry leader in cleaning up toxic waste sites throughout the West, and Ian took quiet pride in it and his employees.

Husband, father and businessman weren't enough for Ian; he added Los Angeles Police Officer to his resume, his interest in and support for law enforcement resulting in Ian patrolling the streets for 19 years as a reserve officer with the LAPD.

Ian enjoyed traveling, particularly piloting his Cirrus, flying into Camarillo to visit old friends for lunch or dropping in on his daughters. An avid marksman, he'd drive into the Arizona desert for spur-of-the-moment target practice, but seemed especially proud watching his wife break clays when she was on the Ventura County District Attorney's Trap Team.

Nothing gave Ian more satisfaction than spending time with his family: watching his wife in court, hammering crooks into oblivion; cheering for his daughters at cross country and swim meets -- Ian lived for these moments.

He is survived by his wife Wendy, daughters, Sarah and Alison, son, Ian, sister, Heather and mother, Marian.

I was so sorry to hear about Ian's death. Wendy, my heart goes out to you and your girls, Ian's family, and his sister Heather whom I have known for over 20 years. I cannot imagine the shock, grief and pain you are all feeling. Thank God you made the decision to retire early Wendy, to have such precious time that you had no idea would be cut so short. Blessings to you and your families.

Ian was my partner and friend from 1989. We started our business together 22 years ago. It was very sad that Ian died at such an early age. He retired 2 years ago to enjoy his family. We were sorry that he retired because we worked so well together. On behalf of my family and the officers and employees at Applied Environmental Technologies (that Ian helped start), our sympathy goes out to Wendy and his children.

Ian's passing left a huge hole in the hearts of many. I can only imagine the pain that Wendy and the girls feel, even now. Ian was my friend, and I will miss him, his humorous approach to most things, and his ever present smile. His loss was truly a shock!

I met Ian 47 years ago. I considered him my best friend. Ian and I spent many days in the ocean, diving and body surfing and belly boarding. Ian was responsible for getting me hired at Dames and Moore as a marine biologist in 1976 and again at McClelland Engineers in 1982. Ian was the best man at my wedding in 1982. We worked together for the last 36 years. We experienced many ups and downs through those years. I always respected Ian as a mentor and good friend. My best wishes go out to Wendy, Sarah, Alison and Ian Jr.

We had some fun times at the Camarillo house (especially when sheep were involved) and shooting things at Levyland, but nothing was more obvious about Ian than how much he loved, and would have done anything to protect, the three most important women in his life - Wendy, Sarah and Alison. I know your hearts are broken in pieces, but I hope you are able to keep some comfort from the love that you shared. My heart goes out to you. Godspeed Ian; yours was a life well-lived.
