Irene L. Dixie Gibbons, 86, of Oxnard, passed away Friday, May 2, 2008, at Brighton Gardens in Camarillo, after a courageous fight with an extended illness.
She was born in Portland, Ore., on March 26, 1922, to Evelyn Alma Reed Alford and Harry O. Alford. After high school, she worked for Bell Telephone Co. A co-worker invited her to make a trip with her to visit her boyfriend, and there she met her future husband, James W. Gibbons. Jim was in flight school in Pensacola, Fla. Later the next year on Nov. 1, 1943, when Jim received his wings, they were married in the Base Chapel.
During their Navy career, Dixie worked for the Salvation Army and antique stores. She was a charter member of the Oxnard Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and a member of the Oriental Clowns, also a member of the Eastern Star of Fayettville, Ark., a longtime member of the Oxnard Monday Club. She loved working with antiques and crafts of all kinds, and she made many beautiful table decorations for her various clubs. The clowns visited shut-ins and nursing homes.
Jim and Dixie lived various places during his time in service to his country. At the end of a military career, they moved to California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, parents and brother Harry Alford.
She is survived by stepmother, Twana "Tiny" Alford; brother George Alford; two daughters, Nancy Gay Durkee and husband Terry and Gretchen Lea Faircloth; four grandchildren, Gaye Nicole Matthews, Eirk Ronald Gorden, Barry Brad Gordon and Royce Trevlin Trey Faircloth; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Nicole Matthews and Barron Dillion Matthews; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank Dr. A. Prasao Ananda, M.D., The Assisted Home Hospice and the Skilled Nursing Staff at Brighton Gardens in Camarillo.
No memorial service is planned.
Interment will be at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura.
Any donations on her behalf should be made to the Shriners Crippled Children Hospital, 3160 Geneva St., L.A., CA 90020.
