Jerry was born in Marshfield (now Coos Bay) Oregon to Emma and Clarence Jarvis on October 21, 1931. While attending school in Coos Bay he discovered the trumpet and enjoyed playing first chair in his high school and college bands. In 1953, he enlisted in the Army to serve his country during the Korean War. After the Army, he attended Oregon State, where he was president of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and moved to San Diego, CA in pursuit of the California sunshine.

In San Jose he met Ann Ingoldsby, a grade school teacher, and they were married on April 14, 1960 in Lindsay, CA. While working at Lockheed, he earned his MBA from San Jose State, and began raising a family. In 1973, he moved his family to Thousand Oaks, CA to work for the Times Mirror Company and later the Daily News, and then McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, until his retirement in 1996. Jerry was eager to move back to Thousand Oaks after retirement where he enjoyed spending time with his grown daughters and their families. He and Ann also enjoyed traveling the country and the world, but the beach was always his favorite place to relax. He was an avid supporter of his children and grandchildren's many sports and band activities.
