Josephine P. Wetzel, “Jo,” a sweet and loving lady, passed away Jan. 28, 2009, at the age of 81. She was very giving to all she knew.
Jo was born in Kansas City, Kan., on Nov. 5, 1927. She attended Washington High School there and graduated in 1946. In 1953, she married Nevin Wetzel, and they moved to Kansas City, Mo., where they remained until 1961. Jo worked for the law firm of Stanley, Stanley, Schroeder in Kansas City, Kan., from 1946 to 1948, and then worked for medical groups in both Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. They decided to move out west to California in 1961, and after a three-month road trip, settled in Thousand Oaks in 1962. Once they settled in Thousand Oaks, her first job was with Dr. Ronald Goldstein as office manager. She worked from 1962 until 1970, when Nevin obtained employment with the LAPD as property supervisor. They returned to Thousand Oaks after four and a half years, and she then worked for Lombard Medical Group, PIA, Western Properties and Stair Master. Jo retired in May 1996. More recently, her devotion and compassion has been as a volunteer in the emergency room at Los Robles Hospital, where she served for over 10 years.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Nevin; her parents, Dawson and Delta Penn; and her stepmother, Alva Penn.
Jo leaves behind her very special companion, her Chihuahua Cookie, who was always at her side, and brought much joy.
What a wonderful person Jo was. She will be dearly missed by her family and many dear friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
Services will be held at 12 noon Monday, Feb. 2, at Griffin Family Funeral Chapel, 101 Wilbur Road, Thousand Oaks, Calif., with interment following at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village, Calif.

Jo was married to my mother's cousin, Nevin Meyer Wetzel, and they visited our family many times over the years. In the last years of my mother's life, Jo was a steady presence. They talked frequently and shared a wealth of family stories. After my mother's death in October 2008, I had reconnected by phone with Jo. I was reminded of her sweet and giving countenance and appreciated so much her words of comfort and the loving memories she shared of my mother. I was looking forward to our next call the very week I learned of Jo's passing. She is the last of my mother's extended family and like my Mother was graced with a naturally giving and kind nature. I will miss my connection with Jo, as will so many.

My husband and I have been neighbors of Jo for over 17 years, and what a lovely, lovely woman. Always a smile on her face and she was just so excited to get her baby "Cookie" that she walked without fail about the neighborhood. This world is a better place because Jo Wetzel was here with us. Jo will be missed, for her smile and her unfailing sense of compassion for all for all that she met whether in the grocery store, hospital emergency room or as a neighbor.

With deepest sympathy to the family of Jo Wetzel who always met you with a smile. She never forgot our son Chad and always asked about him although it was 48 years ago when he got his first glasses from Dr. Goldstein.
