Passed away on May 26, 2011, at the age of 67.

Fr. Carroll was born in Mill Street, County Cork, Ireland, on July 6, 1943, to Timothy and Julia Carroll. He attended All Hallows College Seminary in Dublin and was ordained on June 18, 1967, for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. His first parish assignment began at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Los Angeles where he served as Associate Pastor. As his priestly journey continued, he served in many parishes and schools throughout the archdiocese including St. Michael High School (Educator), St. Brendan, St. John the Baptist de la Salle, and St. Luke the Evangelist (Associate Pastor). He also served as Chaplain at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach from 1982 to 1993 ministering to the sick and dying.

In 2000, he became Pastor at St. Lorenzo Ruiz in Walnut. From there he served at St. Mary Magdalen, Blessed Junipero Serra, and most recently, St. Maximilian Kolbe as Administrator Pro Tem, and St. Julie Billiart as Senior Priest. Through his ministry, Fr. Carroll touched many people's lives. He was a beloved priest, mentor, brother, and friend. His passion for the Lord knew no bounds.

He was exuberant in love for the Church and for the people he served. He was committed to spreading the Gospel in thought, word, and deed. He connected to people on all levels and believed we are all holy people in the eyes of God. He had a terrific sense of humor and shared several Irish stories during his homilies.

Fr. Michael Carroll will be truly missed in our community of faith, but he will never be forgotten. We will carry his spirit, joy and the love of Jesus Christ with us always. It could be said that he was "one of a kind," but hopefully he is not "one of a kind" because the world needs more Father Carrolls. We need good people that work everyday to make the world a better place. We need people that can give us a sense of what heaven will be and Father Carroll did that. Our lives may be a bit dim without him but if you look at the night sky I think you'll see it's a bit brighter with the addition of his star.

Fr. Carroll is survived by his brother, Bishop Timothy Joseph Carroll SMA; his sisters, Margaret O'Doherty and Mary Fennessy; and many nieces and nephews who reside in Ireland.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 3, at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Road, Newbury Park, CA 91320-3258, (805)498-3602. Internment will take place at a later date in Ireland. Condolences may be sent to: Most Reverend Timothy Joseph Carroll, SMA and the Carroll Family, c/o St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Road, Newbury Park, CA 91320-3258. Arrangements made with the assistance of Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, Thousand Oaks.

Father Carroll had a way of making you feel as though he was talking to you directly when he said mass. He always said we were not there by accident, that we were meant to be there at that moment in time. He always said that we were all holy. Condolences to Father Carroll's family and to all those whose lives he touched in some way. love, Peggy Buchanan, Camarillo, CA

I metFather Michael while teaching at St. Michael's from 1974 to 1977. He welcomed me to the school and was a good friend. He was devoted to the students and an inspiration. l also had some good times with him and Bob Soranno having pizza and beer after some school functions in the evening. I am very sorry to hear of his passing and I send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

When I think of good priests I always think of Father Mike. I will always remember him because he refered me to my first job! At St. Michael's High, as he walked the halls in the 70's, he always had nice words to say to you as he was a very personable priest. The Starlets loved him and he loved us. My condolences go out to his family and all the lives that he touched. He will be missed.

Fr. Michael was instrumental in my life in a way that made my character stronger and the love for God greater.....he made a decision that made me see that for the love of God we must be persistant and no matter what God should be the center of our lives bo matter what humans say....Fr. Michael thank you for yyour faith and homilies, you were instrumental in me understanding the Holy Trinity; like water that takes different forms, water itself the essence, God...when water is frozen it changes to a physical form, ice: Jesus and when water is boiled, the steam, still water, the Holy Spirit.....and Fr. Willie and I are still married, you would find our story interesting and full of testimony, thanks for teaching and guiding Willie....thank you for your service to the LORD at St Michael's....

Father Mike and I used to "hang" together back when I was teaching at St. Michael's High School. In 1976, when I was first married, he was one of the presiding priests. He was always a delight, great sense of humor, very upbeat, killer stories. Father - may you be in Heaven half-an-hour before the devil knows you're gone!

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Fr. Michael. I got to know him while he was at St. Lorenzo Ruiz parish in Walnut. In all the time that I knew him, I can't remember a moment when I didn't laugh or smile while in his presence. He had such a great sense of humor and a very warm, caring heart. Fr. Michael was undoubtedly one of the best people I’ve ever known. In many ways, he was not only a friend but also like family to me. I’ll always be thankful that God blessed me with his presence and friendship. His spirituality and kindness will never be forgotten – like an imprint on the heart. I love you, Fr. Michael, and I miss you very much, more than words can say. For many of us, you were always an angel on earth, and I know you’re going to be a great one watching over us from heaven. RIP, and God bless you always.

Father Carroll was Chaplain and one of my counselors at St. Michael's Girls High School in Los Angeles, CA '74-'78. He was so instrumental in bringing me through many of the challenges I faced growing up and some of the dysfunction in my home. I am forever grateful for the way he has touched my life. I love you Father Carroll and may God Bless and Keep you in His arms. (Alretta Gaskins).

I met Father Carroll in 1974 when I first began teaching. He was one of the first people to make me feel at home at St. Michael's High School. He was very funny and was the life of the party after our work. The girls loved him and most of the teachers loved him too. I was very sorry when he was reassigned and had to leave St. Michael's. He was a good friend.
