Phyllis Sehrer Obituary

Phyllis Ann Sehrer

Newbury Park, CA

Phyllis Ann Sehrer passed peacefully on December 30, 2016. Phyllis was the 1931 City of Pasadena's Valentine's Day Baby, born to Gladys and Clarence Hanson. Phyllis grew up in the Pasadena area and attended Pasadena City College. During a summer job at Sequoia National Park, she met her future husband, Robert Sehrer, from Hollywood. They married September 3, 1951 at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Altadena just before Bob's deployment to Korea and Japan where he served until 1953.

Phyllis and Bob moved to Newbury Park in 1966. Phyllis loved telling the story of how she stood in line all night at the William Lyon Homes sales office to purchase her dream-home on the lot they had seen the day before. They had 5 children, Patricia (Hanley), Cathy (Johnson), Jim Sehrer, John Sehrer and Mary (Johnson). Phyllis kept her brood busy in both the Timber and Live Oak Chapters of 4-H where she served as a Leader and head of the sewing project.

Bob passed away unexpectedly in 1980. Known for her strength and positive attitude, Phyllis stayed busy outside the home. She went to work at Loyola Marymount University and then went on to Oxnard Frozen Foods until the plant closed in 1989.

Phyllis enjoyed an active social life. She joined the Agoura Senior Center, Goebel Senior Center, the St. Julie's Owls Club and other groups where she made many friends. She enjoyed time at her beach condominium and traveled with friends from her senior groups up until her death. She particularly enjoyed going to the Camarillo airport with her grandson, Matt Hanley, and watching the different types planes going in and out of the airport. And, for many years, she enjoyed the companionship of John Crawford of Oxnard until his passing.

In October, Phyllis enjoyed a mini-family reunion in Somis at the wedding of her granddaughter, Michelle Johnson (parents Cathy and Randy Johnson) to Gregory Olson. Phyllis was extremely happy to be able to attend this very first wedding of one of her granddaughters.

Phyllis is survived by her children: Pat Hanley (husband Mike), Cathy Johnson (husband Randy), Jim Sehrer (wife Pam), John Sehrer (wife Carolyn) and Mary Johnson (husband Dave); brother Ed Hanson (wife Ruth); 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, January 9th from 5-9 PM at the Rose Family Funeral Home, 4444 Cochran St., Simi Valley. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 10th at 10 AM at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 2475 Borchard Rd, Newbury Park with a reception to follow. She will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City next to her husband, Robert.

Phyllis will be sincerely missed by her family and those who her knew her.

Phyllis Sehrer and John Crawford

After my dad, Bob Sehrer, passed away, my mom had a life partner, John Crawford, who was a former college professor. They were very happy together for over 20 years until he passed. Mom loved his poetry and his company.

My mom was an amazing person. She raised five children and always was up for an adventure. I still remember her taking us to our new home in Newbury Park in 1966. My dad was finishing the big move with my grandfather. She had five kids, a gold fish, and our cat, Cindy, driving down Reino Road which seemed in the middle of nowhere at the time. She was excited for our new life in the Conejo Valley and ready for all of the adventures that life would bring us.

She had a great life and had many friends. We will all miss her.

To Phyllis' family, Patches, and Cindy,
I was so sad to read of Phyllis' passing. I knew her through John Crawford. She was truly one of the nicest people... beautiful inside and out. I know she's in a wonderful place, and I will pray for all of you.
