Valerie Greck Obituary

Valerie Lynn Greck, a lifelong Ventura resident and a homemaker who enjoyed making crafts for friends, family, weddings and celebrations, died July 8, 2008, after a long struggle with cancer. She was 50.

She was born in Ventura on Sept. 2, 1957. She died at home in the arms of her husband of 23 years, Gerald Greck.

Her family recalls that one of her last activities, early in her illness, was working with a friend, Rita Bell Hill, to collect clothing for victims of Hurricane Katrina and to arrange for shipping the donations to New Orleans.

In addition to crafts and party decorations, she enjoyed playing the organ. She was beloved among her friends and family for her brash sense of humor.

Valerie graduated at Ventura High School in 1975. She attended business school, and was an office worker at two local businesses before she chose to stay home after the birth of her second son. She worked for a few years as a teacher's aide at Serra School and later worked for several years tending bar part-time at the Keynote Lounge in East Ventura.

She was a member of Eastern Star, Channel Islands Chapter No. 78, and a former member of Bethel No. 89, Job's Daughters, in Ventura.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Roy Miller and Joshua (Debra) Greck of Ventura; mother, Lois Marie Marrs of Ventura; brothers, John (Marie) of Port Angeles, Wash., and Richard (Pam) of Quartz Hill; grandchildren, Kortni and Joshua Miller of Ventura; and six nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy M. Marrs, in 1974 and recently by her beloved aunt, Doris Turner, of Omaha, Neb., a frequent visitor to Ventura.

Her family wishes to thank Dr. Slater and his team at the County Medical Center in Ventura for their excellent care.

Memorial donations may be made to the J. Clifford Lee Memorial Cancer Fund of the Order of Eastern Star, care of the secretary, Channel Islands Chapter No. 78, 482 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura CA 93003.

According to her wishes, there will be no services.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.

My condolence to the Marrs & Greck families on the loss of such a wonderful person is deeply felt.
I first met Valerie when we were 16 at the skating rink. She became my first steady girlfriend. We were part of the “Rink Rats” skaters at the Roller Gardens in Oxnard. We would cruise Main St. and the beaches back then, in my yellow and black Dodge Charger. I am proud of the fact I was able to call her my steady girlfriend for a year.
I was so shy and Val was always so fun and out going, she always made me laugh a lot. Of course we went our own ways and lost touch. I thought about her now and then; once and a while I would hear about her and wonder if she ever remembered a skinny kid driving way too fast in my yellow and black Charger!
It wasn’t until I learned of Val’s passing did I realize that the, impact on my life was so apparent. Still carrying a torch for her after all these years, and the tears keep flowing. Gerald you are the luckiest man in the world to have a life with Val. And I only knew her for a year. Sweet Val you are missed!

Dear Gerry, Josh, Ray, Lois & Family,

Our deepest sympathy.
If photos were in dictionary's, Val's would be forever under "friend" She was the real deal. She was one of the most thoughtful & caring people I've ever known ~ she gave, volunteered, & lent a helping hand without blinking an eye. Her Christmas gifts were thought out carefully ~ she knew us all too well!
we will always miss you my friend. 'Til we meet again.
Love,
Margaret & Bob

I AM SO GLAD TO HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF HAVING VAL AND GERRY ATTEND MY B`DAY GATHERING AT MY SISTER`S (RITA BELL HILL) HOUSE IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR. I WAS IMPRESSED BY GERRY`S DEDICATION AND OBVIOUS LOVE FOR VAL AND WAS DEEPLY TOUCHED BY HER GIFT TO ME OF TWO `SPECIAL AWARD PINS` SHE RECIEVED AS A CHILD FOR HER ACHIEVEMENTS IN MUSIC. SHE APPRECIATED MY ABILITIES AS A MUSICIAN AND GAVE ME THE PERFECT GIFT, MADE EVEN MORE SPECIAL BECAUSE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE IT HAD IN HER LIFE! I LOVED HER `ATTITUDE` AND OUTLOOK ON LIFE. SHE WILL BE MISSED, ESPECIALLY BY MY SISTER, RITA BELL HILL, WHO CONSIDERED VAL AS ONE OF HER CLOSEST BUDS! MAY GOD BLESS AND COMFORT GERRY AND THE REST OF VAL`S LOVED ONES.

Gerry and Josh

Val was a very SPECIAL friend. When I needed help with ANYTHING from planning a party to fund raisers she was right there. Val was a true friend to many people in Ventura and knew the majority of the rest of the population. She always had a gift for each of her friends at Christmas. And always found a "goofy" one for Don. I will miss sharing our birthday parties in September each year. Especially, I will miss the great advice, opinions and ideas you shared with me. Thank you Gerry and Josh for always being there for Val. Don and I will be here for you both ANYTIME.

Dear Gerry, & Josh, Grandma Lois and the rest of the family
I take solace in knowing that Aunt Val is no longer in pain. I remember many of the happy times spent with her such as at Josh and Debra's wedding last year. She was generous of heart and she loved her family. She preferred to stay close to home and that is where she chose to be until the end, alongside Gerry. I will always remember her fiery spirit and her kind heart.
