Ruby Kiser Obituary

RUBY MCCOWAN KISER passed away Thursday morning, January 11th, 2024, at her home. She was born April 7th, 1922, making her stay here on earth 101 years, 9 months, 4 days, and was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County. Her parents were James Oscar McCowan and Sarah Jane Fuller McCowan.
Ruby was loved and admired by her family and all who knew her. Widowed at a young age, Ruby raised her three children on her own. She led with strong faith, guidance, and instilled in them a desire for education and a strong work ethic. If anyone asked her how she accomplished this alone, her response was always, "I wasn't by myself, God was with me every step of the way." She had an unwavering faith in God, and shared that faith often. She attended Primitive Baptist Church throughout her life. Her legacy will include her family's adherence to her sound advice and guidance which resulted in her grandchildren now holding professional titles of pharmacist, dental assistant, financial planner and insurance entrepreneur, teachers, certified nursing assistants, civil engineer, technology director, nurse practitioner, social worker, and most importantly two ministers of God.
Ruby was truly the matriarch of the Kiser family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Harlow Kiser; two step-children, Herman Kiser and Dennis Kiser; five brothers, Dewey (Opal) McCowan, Stafford (Nettie) McCowan, Stanford McCowan (infant), Tom (Ethel) McCowan, Wesley (Shirley) McCowan; four sisters, Tilda (Finis) O'Quinn, Virgie (Steve) Butcher, Meda (Zoal) Fleming, Zora (Mutt) Fleming.
Ruby is survived by her loving family which includes her three children, Kitty (William) Jackson, Robert (Joanette) Kiser, and Kathy Jackson; two step children, Ruby Rife and Beulah Kyle; eight grandchildren, Tracy (Michael) Fleming, Benjamin (Stephanie) Jackson, Jaime (Nathan) Wilson, Wade (Kaylee) Jackson, Cody (Nakeesha) Jackson, and Matthew (Sanem) Kiser, Billy (Lia) Jackson, and Tara Jackson; fifteen great grandchildren, KayLee (Matthew) Willis, Kristen (Brad) Blankenship, Sawyer Jackson, Brooklyn, Owen, and Rikki Wilson, Izabell and Axl Jackson, Jacob, Eliana, and Everleigh Jackson, Liam (Cori), Katrina, Heidi, and Shana Jackson, and one expected in April, Ezra Jackson; three great-great-grandchildren, Brayden "Baby Harlow", Emberlyn, and Liam Willis. In addition, she is also survived by a host of special nieces, nephews, and friends.
An evening service was conducted, Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders of the Primitive Baptist Church officiating. The family received friends after 6 p.m. prior to the service.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Haysi Funeral Home with Cody Jackson and Wade Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the McCowan-Fuller Cemetery, Birchleaf, Virginia.
Pallbearers were Benjamin Jackson, Wade Jackson, Cody Jackson, Matthew Kiser, Michael Fleming, and Nathan Wilson.
