Bryan Anthony Obituary

Bryan R. Anthony

Escalon, CA - May 14, 1957 - January 7, 2018

Bryan, our loving husband and friend was born on May 14, 1957, in Visalia, CA, to Dick and Betty Anthony. He was one of three active boys. Older siblings were Craig and Paul Anthony. He attended Mt. Whitney High School, College of the Sequoias, University of California, Davis (BS) and California State University, Fresno (MS).

Bryan was a valued member of the team at Fetzer Vineyards, which he joined in 2016. Bryan had in-depth understanding of the viticultural nuances of the Interior Valley grape region and an honest and reliable demeanor to source high quality grapes while balancing grower perspectives and developing healthy business partnerships. His efforts in the area enabled Fetzer Vineyards to source quality fruit from the heart of the state for brands including their flagship, Fetzer, as well as Little Black Dress, Bonterra, 1000 Stories, and Anthony's Hill. Prior to his time at Fetzer Vineyards, Bryan contributed to vineyard management and grower relations practices at several respected organizations. At Treasury, formerly Diageo Chateau & Wine Estates, Bryan oversaw contract growers from the Delta to Fresno County as well as Contra Costa and Amador counties. Bryan's extensive experience also encompassed managing 1,800 acres of premium wine grapes for Wente Family Estates in the Livermore Valley, including 400 acres for external clients, and a 10-year tenure with E&J Gallo Winery, where he held a series of leadership positions in winegrowing and viticulture.

Dedicated to the wine industry Bryan was an active member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV), Unified Wine and Grape Symposium (UWGS), and the CSU Fresno Viticulture and Enology Alumni Association, serving as President for many years.

Bryan enjoyed spending time with his wife, Marit, and his family and friends. He was an animal lover, cats, dogs and chickens brought joy to his home. As a true farmer Bryan felt at ease in nature in his almond orchard and the vineyards where he worked. He loved snow skiing and reading. He was also an enthusiastic and respected Water Polo referee for 40 years.

Bryan was our husband, brother, uncle, cousin and nephew. He leaves his wife Marit and two brothers Craig Anthony (Sharon) of Port Ludlow, WA, Paul Anthony (Sue) of Bakersfield, and, nieces Jessica Anthony Klassen (Michael) of Blaine, WA., Sara Anthony of Bakersfield, and Stephanie Anthony Santa (Jim) of Rochester, New York, and nephew Bryce Arana of Brentwood, CA. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dick and Betty Anthony of Visalia, CA.

Bryan is someone I truly enjoyed talking with. His smile and laugh was precious, as was his standard for living life fully with a sincere regard for others. It was a better world with him in it. I have amazing memories on the ranch with him at Gallo, driving around and learning about harvesting and such. I developed my love of reds with he and Marit after they said "Pick a bottle, any bottle" while pointing at a wall of dusty bottles of wine beneath their home amongst the vines. After that it was one of the best nights for Mexican food ever, in my life - maybe it was the effect of the good wine and even better company. One of my fondest mini vacations ever was with them on that trip to see them.

My heart and love go out to you all, Marit and Anthony brothers, and family.

I am sorry I did not get that next visit in with you both Marit. But I will be seeing you this next year I hope. And you and I will toast your greatest love and best friend. Sending Love and prayers.....Shanon

I'm so sorry to hear about Bryan's passing. I knew Bryan in high school up through my mid-20's. Bryan was a very smart and positive guy. He was so fun-loving and a joy to be around. I met his lovely wife Marit. Our lives followed different paths after our mid-20's but I will never forget Bryan as one of the friendliest individuals I ever met.

To a fellow officiating colleague and friend. Always had a smile and a kind thing to say. He walked those pool decks for the right reason, those athletes, and you could tell he loved it. The sport, and our communities will miss him dearly.

Godspeed Bryan

I am very sorry to hear of Bryan's passing. I was his room mate for a year at U.C.Davis and fraternity brother. I had always planned to contact him in the future since I live not too far away in Turlock and now I regret not trying to get together sooner.
