Charles "Paul" Johnson (1927-2015)

On June 1, 2015, after a short hospital visit for a broken hip, Charles "Paul" Johnson went to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Although we are sad about his leaving us, we are rejoicing in his "Homegoing."

A fourth-generation Californian, Paul was 87 years old and was an Ivanhoe area farmer since 1960. He is predeceased by his parents Henry Laurence and Mary Grace Johnson of Oxnard, California, his brothers Larry and Raymond and sister Winifred. He is survived by Shirley, his wife of sixty-six years, his sister-in-law Mary Vivian Johnson, and a multitude of nieces and nephews, and even more friends.

In 2008, Paul was honored by the California Farm Bureau Federation for "Dedicated and Distinguished Service to the Farm Bureau and California Agriculture." He was also President of the Tulare Farm Bureau, and a Farm Bureau National Delegate.

Paul was born in Oxnard, California, where he managed the Johnson Family Ranch until the ranch was moved to Visalia in 1960. He attended grammar school in Port Hueneme, graduated from Oxnard High School in 1945, and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1950. He also served aboard the Battleship Iowa from 1945 to 1946, enlisting right after high school.

A member of Visalia Methodist Church since 1960, he served on the building committee, and was a member of the Floyd Westbrook's Bible and Breakfast Club, S.A.M. (Senior Adult Ministries Bible Study Group), and the Thursday morning Men's Bible Study.

He was an active member of the Visalia Rotary Club,

Paul held office in local, state and national farm bureau organizations and made multiple trips overseas working with agricultural organizations, including a trip in 1971 to Pakistan under the auspices of the US State Department. He was also Chairman of the Walnut Commission.

He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends for his gentle laugh and his commitment to Jesus. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain.

A memorial service will be held at Visalia Methodist Church, 5200 West Caldwell Avenue, Visalia CA 93277 on Saturday, June 13 at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Visalia Methodist Church, 5200 West Caldwell Avenue, Visalia 93277, or to Tulare County Farm Bureau Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 748, Visalia 93279.

It was truly inspiring reading about Paul's love for the land and his gentle laugh. It brought to mind Jesus' promise that the meek will inherit the earth, and I know Paul will enjoy the fulfillment of the prophecy where men will beat their swords into plowshares. My hope is that such Biblical thoughts bring thoughts of peace to your mind and heart during this difficult time. - Mt. 5:5; Micah 4:3,4

There is a sweetness in knowing that Paul's faith in Jesus has brought him into the joy of being before the Lord. And yet, there is such sadness in losing from this earth Paul's special kind presence.

Paul and I grew up together in Oxnard! His families ranch was close to ours. We were boy scouts, played high school football, and were life long pals. Paul was a wonderful human being.
