Katherine "Kay" Mary Bender
Tulare - Katherine "Kay" Mary Bender was born in Delano, CA in April 1917 the third of eight children to Albert A. Villard and Agnes A. (Panero) Villard. She attended Columbine School in Earlimart, CA, Delano Union Grammar School, and graduated from Delano Joint Union High School with high marks in 1934. She worked at the First National Bank as a notary, assistant cashier, and was the first female bank officer in the Central San Joaquin Valley as well as a member of The National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club. While employed in April 1946 she was voted one of the four best dressed women in Delano by fifty "well-known and well-established business and professional men" - an accomplishment she was fairly proud of since she shopped on a budget and made her own modifications, unlike the other three finalists who were all married and bought their clothes in the big cities. In June 1946 she married Wilfred "Bill" S. Bender and moved to Tulare. She was a homemaker and the bookkeeper/controller for B&E Market, B&E Ranches, Bender Ranch Market, and Bob's Super Market. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all of her siblings; Ambrose Villard, Virginia Smith, Francis Bennett, Albert Villard, John Villard, Daniel Villard, and Angela "Jobie" Price. She is survived by her sons Robert W. Bender (Elaine) and Richard T. Bender (Kim), grandchildren Keri Bender, Tyler Bender and Jason Bender; and one great-grandchild David Morton as well as many nieces and nephews.
