Rose Neves

Visalia - Rose Neves was born January 5, 1929 to Joe and Mary Mendonca who immigrated from the Azores Islands. She was the fifth born in a family of eight children. Rose started First grade at Willow School and was one of eight students who graduated from Linwood School. She graduated from VUHS in 1946 and from COS in 1948.

Rose was employed by COS for 29 years where she retired as the Agriculture Department secretary in 1991.

Rose volunteered her time for many organizations in the community. She was a member of the St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society where she served as President as well as holding other offices and Catholic Daughters; she was lector in the church for many years. Rose belonged to many Portuguese organizations including SPRSI Visalia Council where she was the secretary for 60 years and a past Fraternalist of the Year, Luso Financial and the PFSA (Portuguese Fraternal society of America). She was nominated as Honorary State Vice President of the council of LAL West. Rose also was a member of the Cabrillo Club #12 and volunteered as a Pink Lady in the Kaweah Delta Hospital Guild. She was a dedicated member of the Pillow Pals, always embroidering small pillows for the children at Kaweah Delta Hospital.

Besides her parents, those who preceded her in death were her husband George in 1977, her in-laws Manuel and Anna Neves, her sisters and their spouses- Mary Rodrigues Silva and Erma Alves of Lemoore, Marian Alves of Riverdale, Madeline Mendonca of Visalia and her brothers Manuel Mendonca and Frank Mendonca of Visalia.

Surviving her are her five children- Jeanne Warren (Rick) of Tulare, Janice Blain (Ron), George Neves (Melinda), Jeff Neves (Barbara) and Lori Galicia (Joe) of Visalia. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Allison, Jaime, Jared, Scott, Ashley, Katie, Ryan, Lindsey, Haley, Lacey, Jenna, Jacob, six great-grandchildren: Quinn, Skye, Sofia, Zachary, Leila and Zoey. She is also survived by her brother Joe Mendonca of Visalia.

A viewing will be held Sunday, August 5, 2018 at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel from 4 PM to 7 PM and a rosary to be held at 6 PM. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, August 6, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10AM followed by a graveside service at Visalia District Cemetery.
