Arthur Steinberg Obituary

Arthur Richard Steinberg

Brownsville, VT — Arthur Richard Steinberg died peacefully on April 3, 2022. He was born on March 23, 1937, in Zurich, Switzerland to Lotti Stern and William Steinberg, who left Germany in 1936. In 1938, they emigrated with Arthur and his sister Silvia to the United States.

Arthur attended the Park School in Buffalo, New York, then Harvard College, graduating in 1958 Magna Cum Laude. He majored in Greek and Fine Arts with an emphasis on Greek archaeology. After a year at the America School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, he did graduate work in classical archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation was on Etruscan bronzes from the Bernardini Tomb in Praeneste. He also taught at Haverford College during this time.

In 1961, Arthur was awarded a fellowship to The American Academy in Rome, Italy, to work on his PhD. It was in Rome where he met his wife, Frederica. They married in 1962, and in 1964 left Rome and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Arthur continued his academic career at MIT, where he taught a variety of courses; he also ran the Integrated Studies Program for freshmen that examined the relationships between technologies and cultures. He retired in 2002 but continued to pursue his life-long passion for learning.

A true Renaissance man, Arthur had many interests, which he researched in depth. And thanks to his prodigious memory, he could discuss almost anything, from motorcycle engines to classical music, forging to beer-making, Max Weber to Titian, soccer to progressive education, Japanese swords to Tai Chi, and much more.

Above all else, Arthur cherished his family. He and Freddy enjoyed 60 years of marriage, and together they wrote a book called Soul of Venice, built a Japanese garden, hiked and traveled extensively, built stone walls, taught together, and much more. When their boys were young, Freddy and Arthur built a house in Vermont and for 50 years their winters were filled with skiing and sledding, roaring fires, great conversation and much laughter. In warmer months Arthur loved motorcycling with Daniel and Alex, a sport requiring balance, concentration and Chutzpah! It was also a lesson in engine mechanics and repair; there was never a doubt that Arthur knew every bolt, brake pad, chain and sprocket on those bikes, and his sons did too.

In later years, Arthur could still match the curiosity and energy of his grandchildren, and he relished in the little moments of frog hunting, trips to the dump, hikes in the woods (for which he always carried duct tape, string, and chocolate) and rambling talks at the dinner table. He will forever be remembered for his insatiable curiosity, his multi-faceted enthusiasms, his laughter, and the twinkle in his eyes.

His zest for life was matched only by his love and devotion to his wife Freddy; his sons Daniel and Alex; his daughters-in-law Kimberley and Abby; and four grandchildren Jake, Maya, Julia, and Jack.

A private service will be held in Vermont. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur's memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.

Arthur was truly a special teacher. He is one of the few I remember and with whom I've kept in touch over the years. His Integrated Studies Program provided a home-away-from-home for us, something different in the large and indifferent institute we call MIT. His classes were never-before-experienced, combining history, culture and technology. In his history class, we didn't study the typical issues that led to wars between nations. Instead, we took apart clocks (my more talented colleagues managed to put them back) and studied the impact keeping time had on society. He was also such a unique person. On one hand, he is an archaeologist interested in Venice while at the same time, he rides a motorcycle. Even to this day, I enjoy peeling away the onion and learning more about him. He taught me and continues to teach me through his example that we are only limited by our imagination. Thank you Arthur.

The world is lessened by no longer having Arthur in it, but still enriched by all he did in life. I was one of his students in ISP in 1994. For a freshman, professors were usually distant figures at the front of a lecture hall. Arthur by contrast was on a first name basis with all of us, and easy to talk to and learn from. We bonded over our enthusiasm for OS/2 (an upstart PC operating system at the time) and after ISP I would visit him to help debug the computer in his office. Godspeed, Arthur. We'll miss you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Arthur was our Jim/Joanie Class Grandpa even after Jake and Maya moved on. Each of his visits filled me with joy. I will always be grateful for all the love and care he and Freddy gave to Jim. I'm glad he spent this last day with them. I can't explain how much their friendship helped me too. I can't imagine the world without him.

One of my favorite memories of Arthur was when my family got the first colored TV on the block and Arthur came over and enjoyed a Bruins game and a cigar with my father who hadn´t even graduated high school but they had great conversations and a deep mutual respect for each other. RIP dear Arthur.

So many words, too many, so much love and respect for this extraordinary brilliant and passionate man who loved learning and teaching.
Arthur´s first passion was his family, but also included so many of us as colleagues and, of course, for his students.
He was a man of vast intellect, infectious curiosity, a here´s what needs doing, let´s get on with it manner, allowing little if any room for convention or bureaucracy.
Professor of Anthropology, Arthur conceived and developed MIT´s Integrated Studies Program, ISP, for freshmen that examined the relationships between technologies and cultures, and the Freshman/Alumni Summer Internship Program, FASIP.
These programs not only succeeded for years, but served as the seed corn for MIT´s Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP) is a yearlong professional development program for sophomores focused on building the relevant and critical skills necessary for a career in industry, research, or academia. The program features 1:1 advising, interactive workshops and exercises led by UPOP´s dedicated community of mentors, program alumni, employer partners, and staff.
He shared responsibility for delivering his programs with an outstanding team from across the Institute, including dear friends and respected colleagues Karl Reed, Kori Sahin, Alisa Tongg, Lora Chamberlain Zanibbi, Tamara Raimundi Menghi, myself, and so many others, who at his request, became integral to the exciting and amazing learning experiences his programs provided students.
Personally, I will never forget his thoughtful and candid questions and advice, and especially in our long talks in his office with me sitting in a rocking chair while he inquired and guided me sharing his experience and perspective about work and life.
It wasn't long, really, in the scheme of things when I accompanied him to a meeting of the Academic Council where announced that he was stepping down from running the FASIP program, and "my colleague here will replace me as director, serving as a Lecturer in the School of Engineering and the Integrated Studies Program."
His trust and faith in those of us he chose to help him are humbling and inspiring, moments among few that eternally marked one´s life´s work.
I, for one, am forever, grateful to him and hold him forever in my heart.
How many MIT students, graduates benefited significantly from his teaching and his programs, as a role model, went on to be better at whatever they chose to do in life.
What an amazing life Arthur had, and more so gave us all. Brilliant and gracious, Arthur was a blessing, surely, he will rest in peace.
"Remember those who came before and be grateful."
"Cuimhnich air an fheadhainn a thàinig roimhe agus bi taingeil."

I am just a family friend, but having known Arthur nearly my whole life, he made a deep and meaningful impression on me. His laugh (more of a chuckle), warm smile, vast intellect, and infectious curiosity about all things will never be forgotten. A bit of him will always be with me.
