Gail Caccavaro Obituary

Gail Caccavaro

Claremont, NH - Gail Margaret Caccavaro, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in Newport, NH, on September 21, 2025 at the age of 83.

She entered the world in Medford, MA, on St. Patrick's Day of 1942; the fourth of six children born to Joseph and Margaret Adams.

While attending Matignon High School in Cambridge, Gail met a handsome Italian boy who wooed her with poetry and love letters signed "TTTON" (from the Johnny Mathis song "Till the Twelfth of Never"). That high school sweetheart, George T. Caccavaro Jr., became her husband on April 28, 1962. Soon after, they welcomed four children: Denise, George III, Dan, and Kevin.

In 1972, the couple relocated to Claremont, NH, where they built a home that was lively, loving, and open to all. The Caccavaro household was both boisterous and warm - a place where friends were welcomed as family. Gail came to see her children's friends as her own, and many of those friendships remained dear to her for the rest of her life.

Though she made her life in New Hampshire, Gail had an enduring connection to her family's cottage in Wareham, MA. She loved going "down the Cape" and eventually dubbed the cottage "Mimi's Beach House." The cottage was where Gail was happiest - a place full of laughter, endless games of cribbage, and the joy of a house brimming with family and friends.

Gail was a knitter, a cross-stitcher, and a masterful quilter, with an artist's eye for colors and patterns. She continued her meticulous stitching even after arthritis made the work difficult. Her award-winning quilts were both works of art and expressions of her love. She made personalized quilts for each of her children and grandchildren, and even sewed ahead for the future, leaving 10 quilts for great-grandchildren she would never meet.

Gail loved her family above all else. She was the proud grandmother - "Grammy" and "Mimi" - to nine grandchildren, whose adventures and accomplishments filled her with pride. She was joyfully awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild in January.

After George's passing in 2022, Gail moved to Summercrest Senior Living Community in Newport, where she was warmly embraced by a new circle of friends. Her children knew Mom was truly at home there when their phone calls started going unanswered because she was too busy playing cribbage with her buddies.

Gail is survived by her daughter Denise (Steve Ornell); her sons George (Michele), Dan (Kim), and Kevin (Terri Towle); her cherished grandchildren Lexi, Sam, Clara, Cole, Anna, Mia, Natalie, Sebastian, and Simon; and her brother Tom Adams and sister Claire Morelli. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George; her brother Joseph Adams; and sisters Karen Adams and Barbara McKenna.

Visiting hours will be held at Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad St, Claremont, on Saturday, October 18, from noon to 2 p.m., with a service beginning at 1:30 p.m. A reception for family and friends will follow from 2 to 5 p.m. at The Common Man Restaurant, 21 Water St, Claremont.

Yesterday

Gail graduated from Matignon a couple of years before me so we passed each other in the hall and maybe attended games together. I always feel fortunate to have been at Matignon under the care of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Gail is enjoying her reward now; Bless her!
