Harry A Black
White River Junction, VT - Harry A Black died on his 87th birthday, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community in Windsor, VT where he had lived for the past seven years receiving kind and supportive care throughout a decline in health due to Alzheimer's disease. Harry was born in Hanover, NH on November 12, 1938, to parents Henry F. and Beatrice (Skinner) Black. He received his B.A. degree from Allegheny College in 1961 and was drafted into the US Army. Harry served one tour of duty in France, received his honorable discharge, and continued his education at George Washington University Law School. Upon completion of his Juris Doctor degree and admission to the bar in 1966, he joined his father's law practice in White River Junction, focusing on civil and criminal litigation. Early in his career, he met fellow attorney Leslie Morse. The two married in 1969 and worked alongside one another as partners for most of their careers.
Harry was dedicated to his family and community. His calm and thoughtful demeanor helped him in his career and in the role of Hartford moderator for more than two decades, a position that his father held before him. A natural storyteller, with an ear for poetry, he enjoyed participating in a reading program at the Dothan Brook school for many years. After he retired from law, he completed the Upper Valley Educators Institute's curriculum, obtained his teaching license, and began a second retirement career as a substitute teacher at the Woodstock and Hartford High Schools.
At home Harry was dad to his two sons and husband to Leslie. He was a skillful finish carpenter who created detailed and decorative touches as they remodeled and updated their home room by room. Harry enjoyed family trips to the Virgin Islands for almost a decade and later vacations abroad, often to the south of France, with Leslie, Henry and Benjamin and other family members.
Harry is survived by his wife Leslie G. Black of White River Junction; two sons Henry D. Black of Bend, OR and Benjamin M. Black of Northfield, VT; other relatives and friends.
