Joseph Shattie
Hartford, VT - On Monday, June 23, 2025, Joseph Shattie passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
Joe was born on August 26, 1951, in Winooski, VT, to Joyce and Wallace Shattie. He spent much of his youth in Fort Lauderdale, FL, alongside his brother Sam, before returning to Vermont to complete his high school years at Rice Memorial High School in Burlington. A gifted athlete, Joe excelled in many sports, but it was baseball that earned him the opportunity to attend the University of Missouri.
After college, Joe returned to Burlington and began a career in the bar and restaurant industry. This path eventually led him and a close friend to open Than Wheeler's in White River Jct. Following the sale of the restaurant, Joe discovered his true professional calling in sales. Throughout his long and successful career, it was his time at Milton CAT that he cherished most-thanks to the people he worked with and the friendships he formed there.
It was in White River Junction that Joe met and fell in love with his wife of nearly 47 years, Cheryl. Together, they raised three sons: Jason (Aleksey), Kellen (Melinda), and Bryce (Sara). Joe's greatest pride and joy were his five grandchildren, Katie, Payton, Harper, Blake, and Kinsley. Though he never had a daughter, Joe had deep affection for the family's three beloved black lab rescues, lovingly named Labbie 1, Labbie 2, and Labbie 3.
Having lost his own father at a very young age, Joe found a meaningful father figure in his father-in-law, Paul Eckelman. The two shared countless hours working on projects and enjoying simple, heartfelt conversations.
Joe embraced life's surprises, none more profound than reconnecting last year with a brother he had never known - Ron De Pasquale. Though their time together was brief, Joe was deeply grateful for the bond they were able to form.
Passionate about sports and youth development, Joe spent much of his free time coaching hockey and Little League baseball. He also dedicated himself to officiating high school games as an umpire and referee. Beyond the field and rink, Joe was an engaged member of his community. He served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment and the board of Members Advantage Credit Union (now 802 Credit Union), and was a longtime member of the Rotary Club, where he earned the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
The Shattie family extends its heartfelt thanks to the Heart & Vascular Center at Dartmouth Health for their exceptional care and compassion, with special appreciation to Dr. Bruce Andrus for his unwavering support and dedication to Joe's well-being.
Though Joe has left this world, his vibrant spirit and kind heart will live on in the memories of all who knew and loved him.
A Mass to honor Joe's life will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church in White River Junction. Joe's burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
