Linda Gidley Obituary

Linda Gidley

Leeds, MA - Linda J. Gidley, 78, died peacefully on September 13, 2025, at her residence with family by her side.

Born April 10, 1947 to Thomas Ellis and Selma Lillian (Ainonen) Hair in Milford, CT, Linda grew up in Monroe and owing to her friendly nature, was voted "most popular" in Masuk High School's Class of '65. She attended the University of Connecticut, and after exploring the nursing track, graduated with a B.S. in Child Development and Family Relations in 1970. She later became certified in medical coding through Lebanon College. Linda worked as a lead teacher for Head Start, a hemodialysis technician, and a medical secretary before marrying artist Phil Gidley and having their two children, Philip and Sarah, in New Bedford, MA. She found her true home in Vermont when she moved with her children to be closer to her father and sister, Betsy. Linda dedicated many years to being office manager for psychiatrist Dr. Payson at the Aldrich House in Norwich, VT. After his retirement, she went on to work in libraries and bookstores and as a caregiver and recreation assistant, reflecting her great love of books and people. Perhaps her favorite job was her last, as cashier at the Upper Valley Food Co-Op in White River Jct., VT, where she felt most connected to her beloved Upper Valley community.

Linda was active in her faith communities; she thoroughly enjoyed music, contra-dancing, reading, conversation, coffee, and a good game of scrabble. She was a devoted mother and engaged citizen who will be remembered for her curiosity, honesty, generosity, humor, and passion. Linda was predeceased by her parents and sister, Elizabeth Fraser. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah (Jon-Paul) Stracco; her son, Dr. Philip T. (Vonnetta) Gidley; her four grandchildren, Rosalind, Celia, Phinehas, and Samuel; and her nieces and nephews. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Linda Manor Assisted Living and Pioneer Valley Hospice for their compassionate care during the end-stages of Linda's Alzheimer's disease. A green burial took place at Village Hill Cemetery in Williamsburg, MA on September 16, 2025.

Sarah and Philip Tom Mousin let me know about your Mom. I met Linda and both of you at the Methodist Church in WRJ. Linda was a bright light and always ready to laugh and she loved the Lord. My heart goes out to you for your loss. She was a dedicated Mom. Sheila (Newton) Jacobs
