Dr. Richard B. Clutz

Lebanon, NH - Dr. Richard Baker Clutz died October 15, 2022, at his home in Lebanon, NH after a prolonged illness. He was born February 15, 1934, in Trenton, NJ to John Jacob Clutz and Agnes Gudrun Hammer. His father was Chief Engineer of the Pennsylvania RR and the family moved around in his childhood.

Dick graduated from Mercersburg Academy (1952), Princeton University (1956) and then went on to Medical School at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1960. A surgical residency at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City from 1960-1967 followed, interrupted by service as a Surgeon in the US Navy (1962-1964) where he spent mostly in service on the USS Fremont on the Mediterranean Sea.

In 1960, Dick married Robin Louise Hunter of Barrington, RI whom he met while skiing in New Hampshire. They lived in New York City until he finished his residency and then settled in Williamstown, MA where he was a General Surgeon at North Adams Regional Hospital and held clinic at Williamstown Medical Associates until retired in 2000. Dick was beloved by patients and work colleagues alike. He found being a country surgeon very fulfilling. After living in Williamstown for 50 years, Dick and Robin moved to their home In Grantham, NH and later to The Woodlands in Lebanon, NH.

Dick was an avid reader of books. The Clutz family lived on the battlefield in Gettysburg, PA during the Civil War. His favorite books were those about the Civil War, and the two World Wars. He read many biographies. He also enjoyed travel, art, historical guns, target shooting and bow ties. Dick loved alpine skiing, nordic skiing, sailing, hiking, splitting wood, and his beloved calico cat, Hazel. He most passionately loved collecting and repairing many antique clocks which filled the house and caused overnight guests to awaken at the hourly chiming.

Dick is survived by his wife, Robin Hunter Clutz, his children, Andrew Hunter Clutz (Annie Garmey) of Weston, MA, and Susannah Baker Stewart (Jesse Stewart) and Caroline Clutz Keeney (Mark Keeney) both of Salt Lake City. He is also survived by six grand-children, Abby and Hunter Clutz, Sophie and Torin Stewart, Quinn and Eden Keeney and his sister, Signe Hammer of New York City. He was predeceased by his brothers, John and Christopher Clutz, both Princeton graduates.
