Dear Padilla Family. I am sorry for your loss of Dennis.
I remember Dennis from our friendship in the 1950s in East Bakersfield. I remember him even more vividly from our friendship during our high school years at Garces.
This morning as I sat in medication, Dennis Padilla continually flashed in my mind. For so many years I had wondered what had happened to my friend from so many years ago. So I searched for his name on-line and found him., only to be filled with sadness at his passing. Truly, his was a life filled with love and service.

Padilla Family, it is only with having great love that one can feel great loss. I feel them both for this man I was blessed to call Papa.
Papa, you leave this world having left an indelible mark on my soul. I am so thankful, that on what would turn out to be your last trip to Fallon, I got to spend time with you. Thank you for knowing that my sweet Mama had passed away and for asking about her. Thank you for making a family dinner in a hotel room one of love and laughter just as those dinners we shared in your home were. Thank you for showing yet another little one how your teeth come out. Oakleigh still talks about Papa and his teeth coming out as she tries to make hers do the same. The laughs are echoing still. I am so grateful I got to hear you call me Hollywood again; a nickname you gave me from our first meeting. I will forever cherish that final warm Papa hug you gave so freely. I believe it was in that moment you let me know...that you knew all I needed you to. A moment without words, a moment truly indicative of the gracious soul that is you. You truly are my favorite Padilla! Rest in peace Papa...until we meet again. Love, Hollywood.

I met Mr. D on a baseball field at Del Rey Jr. High school in 1969. I had just finished swim team practice at VVHS, came up to see my brother and dad who were at baseball practice. My dad and Mr. D coached the Spirit Shop little league baseball team. I remember watching practice and I made a comment about my brother David missing a fly ball. In a soft but deep voice, Mr. D told me... you think you can do better, put a glove on and go out to the outfield. I said I dont have one, he gave me one. Then I said Im left handed, the glove is for the wrong hand. He reached into the catchers gear bag and pulled out a left handed glove and said, now you have no more excuses, stop talking and go prove yourself. I remember walking out to the out field and heard, run out to the field and respect the game. I felt like I heard the voice of God. I thought. Man, this guy is kinda mean but I dont want to make him mad.
I caught the first fly ball and immediately looked at him for approval. He said, pay attention to what your doing. When practice was over the coaches talked to everyone while I waited in the car. Mr. D called over to me and said lets take a walk. I was like, oh no he is mad at me. He put his big hand on my shoulder and said, I love you and your family, Im proud of how you took my challenge, now you need to stop swimming and come play a real sport!!!! I started playing ball immediately.
At thE end of the year, we had a team party at the pool in Green tree. At one point someone was thrown in the pool and while we were laughing, Mr. D realized this person couldnt swim. She was in the deep-end. Mr. D jumped in immediately, pushed the girl up, and when we pulled her out, he remained at the bottom of the pool. Soon we realized he did not know how to swim either. My dad pulled him out and said, Dennis, why did you jump in when you couldnt swim? Mr. D said, she needed help.
THAT was Mr. Ds heart. Always was grateful, respectful, and self-less. Thank you for imprinting such solid memories and for teaching me what character looks like. I pray to have the impact with others as you had and continue to have with me. SEE YOU IN HEAVEN. Cant wait to take some fly balls! Ill bring my glove with me.
All my love and prayers to all family members. Mrs. D, thank you for sharing such an amazing person with all of us.
Respectfully,
Scott Miller

Our Uncle Dennis was like of father to my three sisters and I. There are no words that could express our love for him and his/our family. We were lucky enough to spend time with him before he was called home and are grateful for the opportunity. We will all miss him dearly. Thank you Uncle Dennis for making us feel loved and included in your brood.
