RUBY GATES Obituary
RUBY GATES Ruby Fay Gates was born on June 28, 1930 in Phoenix, Arizona to the late William Scott and Callie Doris Martin. Her two brothers, W.A. and Clayton Scott and two of her great-grandsons, Monrea Nash and Jermayne Riley preceded her in death. Ruby attended elementary schools in Phoenix, Arizona and Flagstaff, Arizona. She then moved to San Diego, California where she attended Junior High and High School. She met her future husband Vinson Gates Sr. who was stationed as a Drill Instructor at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot in San Diego. They married in October 1952 and had ten children. She and Vinson celebrated 59 years of marriage. Ruby was an avid seamstress and could sew anything that was asked of her. Her talent with a sewing machine was awesome in itself. She was a loving, kind, and spiritual woman who had an outstanding relationship with God. Her love for God and her family manifests itself in the character of her descendants. Ruby's favorite pastime was playing Bingo with other seniors and playing cards with her family. She enjoyed participating in all family events, and her physical presence at these functions will be deeply missed by all. Ruby leaves behind to cherish her beautiful, warm spirit, Vinson Gates Sr., her husband of 59 years; ten children, Brenda Turpeau of Houston, Tx., Vinson Gates Jr. of San Bernardino, Ca., Carla Gates of Birmingham, Al., Donna Bunside (Ray) of Rialto, Ca., Walter Gates of Vacaville, Ca., Hazel Gates of Barstow, Ca., Terry Riley of Barstow, Ca., Calline Moore of Wildomar, Ca, William Gates (Frances) of Las Vegas, Nv., and Germaine Gates (Jennifer) of Las Vegas, Nv.; two brothers, Hobart Martin Jr. (Mennie) of Palmdale, Ca. and Michael Martin of Barstow, Ca; two sisters , Thelma Moss (Alfred) of Barstow, Ca. and Norma Edmonds of Apple Valley, Ca.; thirty-six grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends. Services for Ruby will be on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road, Barstow. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., and the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Riverside National Cemetery on Monday, March 12, 2012. Arrangements provided by Mead Mortuary, 760-256-5671.
