Albert Lewter Obituary

Albert Bryan Lewter

Jan. 19, 1947 - Feb. 20, 2023

Albert Bryan Lewter, 76, who practiced dentistry in Waco for almost fifty years, passed away on February 20, 2023.

Born in Waco, he was the son of Albert and Nancy Lewter, growing up on Colonial Avenue in the Fifties and Sixties and developing a strong work ethic that stayed with him his whole life. Even as a boy he knew he wanted to become a dentist, perhaps recognizing early on that he had remarkable dexterity and the intelligence necessary for the profession.

After graduation from Richfield High School in 1965, where he was on the tennis team, Bryan attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a degree in biology in 1970. At UT, he joined Sigma Chi fraternity along with some of his dear Waco friends and became a dedicated Longhorn fan for the rest of his life.

He then graduated from the Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1974, enjoying both his clinical training and the excitement of the nation's capital. Returning to Waco, he practiced general dentistry for a total of 47 years, retiring in 2021 at the age of 74.

His passion outside of work was hunting and fishing, especially the many dove hunts near Oglesby with his old Waco friends, often including Jim Hurst, James Jeffrey, Mickey Kearney, Tim Taylor, and Jeff Ward. He was an amazing wing shot, rarely missing the darting doves that flew past his favorite spots on the land.

In 2011, he met and fell in love with Elaine Ewing, whom he met on a date at a Lake Belton restaurant. They built their own place on Lake Limestone and spent many happy times there with their home in Copperas Cove. Together they traveled to Belize and especially enjoyed frequent outings to Gruene Hall and Wimberley until his COPD became too severe.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; stepdaughter, Crystal Hughes; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, to whom he was Papaw. The family offers special thanks to Mickey Kearney for his kindness and assistance during Bryan's final months.

A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.

I´m really grateful I got the opportunity to work for such a great doctor! He was the first dentist I ever worked for and he was so patient with me. I will always have the best memories of my time there with him and Debbie Appell! Rest in peace Dr. Lewter!

Always was a friend and colleague that had time for friendly conversation or a story. Could go months without seeing, but when you did, it was like it had only been the day before. We will all miss him!

Bryan was such a lovely kind man and he will be missed. I had the pleasure of getting to know him when he´d come visit me at Canyon Lake. We spent many great times at Gruene Hall. I´ll never forget when he came to our home in Waco to talk to my father about going into dentistry. I think that visit helped him confirm his career.
Blessings to his family. H
Have fun fly fishing with my father in Heaven, Bryan.
