Pamela Steele Obituary

Pamela Helen Steele

June 4, 1945 - Jan. 30, 2022

Pam has gone to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's dementia. She was born to Jim and Georgia "GK" Sampson in El Reno, OK, while her father was stationed in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Her birth was announced over the Pacific Fleet so that he would know she had been born.

She grew up in Orange, TX, the oldest of five sisters, Paula, Jan, Lynn, and Barbara. She spent one year at Stephen F. Austin University before marrying John Steele in 1964 and moving to Lake Jackson, TX.

She raised her four boys, Bill, Robert, Eric, and Kevin, in Lake Jackson, and she was known for her kindness, endless service to others, and good cooking. After having her first two children, Pam earned her nursing degree at the top of her class and served in different ways over the years at the local hospitals and then at Dr. Sabrsula's office. She also served many years alongside other amazing people to cook Sunday dinner for the church youth group at First Methodist Church Lake Jackson. She helped with Brazoswood High School Booster Clubs throughout the fourteen years her boys were in school.

She loved being "Pamaw" to her many grandchildren, as well as nurturing so many others in her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and GK; her youngest sister, Barbara; and her granddaughter, Selina. She is survived by sons, Bill (Catherine) of Munich, Germany, Robert (Fred) of Houston, TX, Eric (Charity) of Portland, OR, and Kevin (Michelle) of Waco, TX; sisters, Paula Pennington of Orange, TX, Jan Leigh (Scott) of Victoria, TX, and Lynn Smith (Creighton) of Redding, CA; and grandchildren, Anna, Alice, Ladd, Lincoln, Owen, Ryan, Hudson, Emily, Patrick, Coleman, and Avery.

Pam moved to Waco in 2009 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Dementia in 2013. Not being able to live independently, she moved into Living Springs Village Memory Care in late 2015 where she was well cared for by the staff and volunteers there. Many thanks to the staff at Living Springs and Bluebonnet Hospice for helping so much with her care in the last years of her life.

Because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, there will be a virtual memorial service at a later date.

We are so sorry for the loss of your mother. I met Pam through the Bess Brannan Elementary when Kevin was there. I later worked with Eric at Brazosport Memorial Hospital during his year between college and med school. Pam was certainly loved and will be missed by all that had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of caring lives on through her boys.
Sincerely
John and Cherryl

One of the most amazing ladies encountered in my life...loved the old school Bugs Bunny / Looney Tunes she often had on...in the 80's (1980's) described me as 1) 16 going on 40, 2) the son by choice, and 3) as long as I was going, any of the Steele boys could go to the event.....She was there when my boys came home from the hospital, there for my wife (Lori) for bridal dress shopping and creator of the most amazing "Groom's Cake" of all time! Wonderful, dear, loved, caring, lady. You have, and ever shall be...family.

Bill, Bert, Eric, and Kevin , I'm so sorry for your loss. I have such wonderful memories of all our time spent together when we were young. I think as a teenager I spent as much time at y'all's house as I did at mine. Y'all will be in my prayers.

What a blessing and joy I experienced from knowing Pam Steele. I first knew her in the 70´s through a mutual friend as a mom of two rambunctious boys. They were around our apartments one summer when I believe Pam had their baby brother. Then years later, I knew her as the mom of dear, funny, creative Kevin. We volunteered on so many school and choir activities together for our kids. Pam always looked a little exhausted, yet happy and energetic at the same time. I appreciated her intelligence, her laugh, her witty humor, and that inner sparkle she had. I love the photo you have chosen that captures that twinkle in her eyes like she is about tell a funny story and start laughing. I celebrate your life Pam Steele!

My deepest condolences to Kevin, Robert, Eric, and Bill and to your families. I wish I could hug each of you.
