Phyllis Baumgartner Obituary

Phyllis Baumgartner, 75, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at a local hospital. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Waco Community Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, 2001 N. Valley Mills Dr., with the Rev. Roger Huff officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco.

Phyllis was born July 30, 1937, in Portland, Ind., to Kendall and Glenna (Wood) Stookey. She attended Markle, Ind., schools and graduated from Portland, Ind., High School. She married the love of her life, David Baumgartner, on Oct. 9, 1960, then moved to Waco and started a family. She received her LVN license in 1974, scoring high enough on her state board to get licensed in any state without further testing. She worked as a LVN and full-time mother. She was a very devoted Christian, loved children, loved giving, enjoyed theater and was a great Nana.

Phyllis was an active member of Waco Trinity Heights Church of the Nazarene, Moscow, MD Church of the Nazarene, and then Waco Community Fellowship Church of the Nazarene. She served on various committees, worked with babies, children, teens, VBS, missionary Society and served as District Assembly Delegate many times. Her favorite stories were taking 36 teens on a weekend retreat to Lake Whitney State Park, cooking for them and keeping the girls in the cabin all night, and having girls slumber parties at her house. She was famous for supplying her potato salad and baked beans for carry-in dinners and for doing the Missionary Society Study each month. The members always looked forward to who she would portray each month. Their highlight activity for the year was attending the annual District Laymen's Retreat at Leakey, Texas, starting with the first one until the family moved to West Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Kerry Baumgartner; brother-in-law, Michael Baumgartner; and sister-in-law, Lois Baumgartner.

Survivors include husband of 52 years, David Baumgartner of Waco; daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" Leonard of Edmond, Okla., and Michele "Shelly" James and husband, Garry, of Waco; son, Mark Baumgartner and wife, Michele, of Marietta, Ga.; granddaughters, Ashley Jarvis and husband, Joshua, Logan Lower, Colby Kendall Lower, and Alicia Baumgartner; three great-grandchildren, Mason, Dylan and Abby Jarvis; brothers, David Stookey and wife, Linda, of Leesberg, Ind., and Robert E. Stookey and wife, Sue, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; goddaughter, Brenda Yoder and husband, Brian, of Warsaw, Ind.; nephews, Jon, Eric, and Todd; nieces, Lisa, Kim and Tova; great nephews, Evan, Owen, Chase, Corey, Casey, Josh, and Skylar; great-nieces, Delaney, Macy, Chelsey, and Morgan; brother-in-law, Phillip Baumgartner and wife, Judy, of Perrysville, Ohio; and numerous other relatives.

Pallbearers will be David Stookey, Robert Stookey, Mark Baumgartner, Phillip Baumgartner, Garry James and Bobby Lewis

I can only imagine...Phyllis, worshipping at the feet of Jesus, while we worship from afar; Phyllis, wondering why we are so sad at her passing, while she is revelling in the glories of Heaven; Phyllis, hearing the Master's words, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of the kingdom."

When I think of Phyllis Baumgartner, I am reminded of a woman who seemed to always have a smile on her face, a hug to give out, and possessed a joyful and giving spirit. She was one of the sweetest people I've ever met; and is one of the reasons I so cherish the years I attended Trinity Heights and First Church of the Nazarene. Heaven has truly gained an angel.

I am totally unable to express my deep condolences & sorrow to the Baumgartner family. I have know Phyllis & David for over 50 years & I know she was very important to me & my children.
