William Sharp Obituary

Sharp, William George

September 14, 1936 - February 14, 2024

Mr. William (Bill) George Sharp, age 87, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2024 in Waco, Texas. Graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Oakwood Cemetery with Dan Carroll officiating.

Bill was born on September 14, 1936 to Thad Wilson Sharp and Frances Eugenia (Gene) Vosburg Sharp in Austin, Texas.  He was a longtime resident of Waco and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waco. He graduated from Waco High School in 1954, and earned his Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Texas.  After graduation, Bill served in the United States Air Force for 4 years.   His next career was as a sports writer for the Kansas City Star.  Bill returned to Waco and enjoyed 28 years with TSTC where he served as a public relations writer. Bill was a devoted fan of the UT Longhorns.  He travelled with friends and family to every UT sporting event he could get to.  He loved his family and friends, sports and more sports, UT, George's, his fellowship in God's Branches Class at First Methodist Church and was proud of his 30+ years of sobriety and the support he received through AA.  Bill was a proud member of Fidelis Lodge Number 1127 and a 32 Second Degree Shriner.

He is preceded in death by his parents Thad and Gene Sharp, uncle, Frank Sharp; and aunt, Willa Bennett.  He is the last member of the lineage of the Sharp family. Survivors include his cousin, George H. Allen and wife, Jane of Waco, Texas.

Bill's family is very thankful to Sheryl Wolske and Wanda Dixon for their steadfast love and care of Bill for many years. We are eternally grateful to them.  Our thanks also to those who cared for Bill through Visiting Angels and Baylor Scott and White Hospice in the last stage of his life.  In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make a donation in Bill's name to either of these organizations or to a charity of your choice.

Bill was a childhood friend who spent each summer with his grandparents who were our next door neighbors in Austin. So, my brother, the neighborhood kids, and I had Bill all summer to play with each day for several years (and George would always come sometime in the summer too for a grandparent visit). We lost touch as time went on and we moved to a different town. Then when my family moved to Waco in 1971, there he was. A rekindled childhood friendship.

Bill´s grandparents were our next door neighbors. Spent many summers playing together when he and his cousin would spend summers with them. Fun times.
