Sr. Veronica Volkmer
February 19, 1936 - February 15, 2025
Sr. Veronica Volkmer, age 88, a Marian Sister of the Diocese of Lincoln, passed away peacefully at Marycrest Motherhouse surrounded by her Sisters on Saturday, February 15, 2025.
Lynne Louise Volkmer was born July 19, 1936, in Nebraska City, the eldest child of Leo and Laurine (Heng) Volkmer, and grew up on a farm near Julian, Neb. She entered the Community of the Mercy Sisters of St. Francis, now known as the Marian Sisters, at St. Thomas Orphanage in Lincoln on August 1, 1958. She was given the name Sr. Veronica.
Sr. Veronica professed her First Vows of poverty, chastity and obedience on February 28, 1960 and made her Final Vows on January 2, 1966. She served in various apostolates including, teaching, catechetical work, and most recently prison ministry. Sr. Veronica also served the Marian Sisters Community in leadership positions. She was Formation Director from 1976 – 1986, forming the young members of the Community both by teaching and by example. In 1988 she was elected Major Superior and served in that role until 1994.
She had a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, her guardian Angel and the Blessed Mother, especially through the Rosary. Sr. Veronica had a deep love for both her natural family and her religious family, and prayed fervently for them.
Sr. Veronica is survived by her siblings, Marlene (Joe) Ricketts, Lee Michael (Mary) Volkmer, Kathy (Shuford) Camby, Gary (Celeste) Volkmer; 14 nieces; seven nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; and the Marian Sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Laurine Volkmer; brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Marlene Volkmer; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Ron Waller; and nieces, Ronna Bremer and Amy Borrenpohl.
Rosaries will be held at Marycrest Motherhouse on Friday, February 21st at 3:30, 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln. A luncheon will be held at the Cathedral immediately following the Mass, with a private burial at a later time.
