Harry Sherman Obituary

Harry Arthur Sherman, of Wapakoneta, Oh. and former long-time resident of Grand Rapids, Mich., passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the age of 73. Thought of by some as the strong silent type, those who truly knew Harry saw a compassionate, loyal, and genuine person.  He was known for his quick, often dry wit, infectious smile, and big heart.
After graduating from Rockford High School and attending Ferris State University, Harry enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country with distinction until 1985.  During his career, Harry earned a degree from the University of Maryland, graduated from the Defense Language Institute, served in Vietnam, Germany, and was part of the Panama Conflict.  He was awarded numerous medals and commendations.
Married for forty-seven years to Sheri, Harry took great pride in his family.  A lover of dogs, he also enjoyed reading, camping, relaxing while watching television, and taking part in muzzleloader and .22 shooting competitions.  Harry was a member of the Eagles Aerie #691, the St. Paul UCC Choir, the Shawnee Long Rifles, the Moulton Gun Club, and acted as Chaplain for the Lions Club of Wapakoneta.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents Harry N. Sherman and Gladys A. (Donigan) Sherman, and his sister Phyllis Sandra VanderKooy. He is survived by his wife Sheri (Staley), his children Stacey L. Sherman and J. Arthur Sherman, and two children from a previous marriage.
Although his life came to an end much too soon, Harry truly lived each and every moment to the fullest. He was a no frills sort of guy who worked hard, played hard, and got involved.  A friend to all who knew him, Harry will never be forgotten.
A memorial service to celebrate Harry's life will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 101 Perry St., Wapakoneta. Friends may call Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schlosser Funeral Home, 615 N Dixie Hwy, Wapakoneta, Oh.
In lieu of flowers, Harry asked that you "Plant a tree to remember me."  Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the VA Hospice Fund in Dayton, Oh.. Condolences may be expressed at www.schlosserfuneralhome.com
