ADRIAN CRONAUER Obituary

CRONAUER ADRIAN JOSEPH CRONAUER Adrian Joseph Cronauer, 79, of Troutville, VA, passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Mr. Cronauer served as a confidential advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) from 2001 through 2009. He represented the POW/MIA Office at meetings within the Office of the Secretary of Defense and at various outside functions including liaison with the leadership of veteran's service organizations as well as family and activist groups. He had lead responsibility for DPMO's dealings with international organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Tripartite Commission. For his efforts, he holds the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service. Prior to turning to the law, Cronauer spent seven years in New York City voicing television and radio commercials. Before that, he owned his own advertising agency, managed a radio station, was program director of a television station, and was a TV news anchorman. He has taught broadcasting at the university level and authored a textbook on radio and TV announcing, used by many colleges and universities. A former United States Air Force sergeant, Cronauer co-authored the original story for the major motion picture, Good Morning, Vietnam! In that film, Cronauer was portrayed -loosely- by Robin Williams whose performance was nominated for an Academy Award. He sat on the Board of Directors of the National D-Day Memorial and has served as a member of the Virginia Public Broadcasting Board, on the Arlington County (Virginia) Cable TV Advisory Committee, and the Board of Governors of the New School for Social Research in New York City. He served two terms as a trustee of the Virginia War Memorial. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeane Steppe; his stepson, David Muse; and grandson, Kevin Muse. Cronauer and his late wife, resided in Troutville, VA, and are survived by stepson, Michael Muse and daughter-in-law, Mary Muse; four grandchildren, Matthew Muse and wife, Kelley, and their son, Hudson, Dr. Sarah (Muse) Minter and husband, Ryan; granddaughter, Christa Buchanan; and grandson, Cameron Buchanan. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 22, 2018, from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's East Chapel. A private interment will be held at a later date with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a veteran's organization of your choice. Arrangements by Oakey's East Chapel, 540-977-3909. A very talented American who truly focused on bringing humor to our uniformed service personnel, and to the families of Americas service members who remain missing in action from their war time service to our great Nation! Adrian and I tangled from time to time over his injection of his unique style of humor but, I truly respected his exceptional talent, and the smiles he bright to almost any situation in which he became involved in the DoD meetings with the Nations families of our missing in action servicemen and civilians! A man who served his Nation and its citizens in an unexpected, but very respectful and uniquely way!

I believe you were our uncle, a relative of my mother, Carol Cronauer, who was placed up for adoption around the time of August 1946. I regret we never met. From all the comments, I gleaned that we are very similar. My mother is an attorney and I am a paralegal, both exceptionally prolific. I see that it is in our genes. I regret we never had conversational exchange over a glass of red wine to discuss a myriad of topics from history to law to current events. As I mourn the loss of an uncle, a family and a life I never knew, I take comfort in the fact that we carry some of your genes and I am very proud to read of all your accomplishments. May you be welcomed into the beatific light.

Grief, I've learned, is really just love. It's all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat and the in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.

Sometimes its hard to find the words to express how much we appreciate someone's life and influence in our own. I think this is one of those times for a lot of us who were inspired, entertained, and encouraged by your life and how you lived out each chapter. What I can do is offer a prayer of condolence for your family, express my personal and eternal gratitude and thanks to you and all who served during the Vietnam War, and render a salute to you - a guy who genuinely understood, appreciated, and selflessly fought for his fellow GIs and veterans and our families throughout your life. Sgt Cronauer was a fun DJ that all U.S.Servicemen and women enjoyed. He made us laugh in the middle of a war zone. He was not the antiwar person the movie portrayed him to be. He was down to earth and everyone knew and spoke good of him. He boosted the morale in all of us that listened to him each day. Rest in Peace Adrian Cronauer.

Farewell to Adrian Joseph Cronauer

We are assembled here to pay a last tribute to a beloved comrade Adrian Joseph Cronauer, who served in the defense of the United States of America.

How well he served his fellow man.

In addition to that service, he is well known to his fellow members of the Returned and Services League of Australia who stand with me here, mourning the passing of one who was a loyal co-worker with us.

As we stand here remembering his many qualities, we join in a silent pledge to sink whatever differences we may have with each other and to extend the hand of comradeship and to carry on our tradition of unselfish service to the disabled, to the bereaved and to the highest ideals of citizenship.

The Ode
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them".

Lest We Forget.

Returned & Services League of Australia,
Washington sub-branch

Adrian, thanks for the memories. From New Year's in South Carolina to the MIA office in Arlington, from discussions on Asian food to German politics to the dynasties of ancient Egypt, it was always a pleasure and never a bore. My apologies (a bit late, it occurs to me) for never getting around to accepting your invitation to get down to Troutville. It always seemed like such a long detour. Now it seems like a small side trip I should have taken years ago. Forever missed, never forgotten.

Adrian was a dear friend and a great mentor in my career. He and I spent our time at Maloney and Burch debating politics and discussing history. July 20, 2018

RIP Brother n Arms you were the voice that kept our hopes alive during our tour in Vietnam.

July 20, 2018

In addition to all else he is known for, while serving the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for POW/Missing Personnel Affairs, Adrian was a welcome and cherished voice for those in the Department of Defense involved in efforts to account for missing servicemembers from past wars (including Operation DESERT STORM, Operations IRAQI FREEDOM, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and World War II). More importantly, he was the voice and the strongest possible advocate for all those that remain unaccounted for from those wars - a privilege those of us who worked with him can attest that he was extraordinarily passionate about as he traveled across the country meeting with their families, meeting with those in supporting government agencies and with family advocacy groups, activists and concerned citizens, and veteran's service organizations. He traveled from Southeast Asia, to Northeast Asia to Southwest Asia and the Middle East to places such as Iraq, Kuwait, and Israel - all in support of the search for answers for family members and to recover our missing from around the world. He served as a Special Advisor in negotiations with North Korea that resulted in the conduct of operations inside North Korea leading to the recovery and repatriation to the United States of remains of our service members who were killed-in-action during the Korean War, bringing closure and comfort to family members who had waited so long. Certainly the Vietnam War veterans and families of those who remain missing from that war particularly appreciated his voice and strong advocacy given his service in Vietnam, but he was equally respected and regarded by families of missing personnel from others wars as well. Those who remain missing and their families have lost a staunch advocate. His impact in POW/MIA issues was significant, his voice was powerful, his dedication unending, and he will never be forgotten. To his family and friends, you have our deepest sympathy on your loss

As Program Director at WRFT-TV in Roanoke, VA, Adrian was my mentor from 1967 to 1970. Adrian booked interviews for a weekly show that I directed called Valley Views. It was hosted by William B. Robertson, a black educator, and leading citizen of Roanoke. In an interview Adrian once said he was a conservative; but he was certainly no racist. In 1968 the South African government was sending apartheid apologists around to talk shows in the US. Adrian booked the apartheid interview; telling the guest hed have the whole half hour. Mr. Robertson was well prepared for the interview; and I delayed his entrance on stage until very close to air time and after the apartheid advocate was seated. Of course, the guest was surprised when he met the show host. That is how Adrian struck a blow against apartheid in 1968!

Until we meet again may you Rest in Peace, Good Night Adrian.

I recall arriving at my unit on July 6, 1968. I asked one of the soldiers if they had an alarm clock so I wouldnt be late to the Chow Hall in the morning. The solider told me not to worry because
Cronauer will wake us up. I let it go at that. When morning came, I heard this loud and lively voice articulating over the radio, Gooood Morning Vietnam. I immediately understood why I was told not to worry and just wait until morning. Since that first shout out by Cronauer I looked forward to that wake-up call. One last remembrance: Credited to the Sergeant or not, let us not forget the adventures of Chicken Man. Thank you, Sergeant Cronauer and rest in peace.

Our "connection" was that we were both members of MENSA®™, the international "High IQ" fraternal organization, and each of us believed that our intellect was a "gift" that should not be wasted. He was kind & generous, and I will miss him (and his humor), very much.
