Agnes "Suzy" Suzanne (Browne) Defibaugh, 84, of Columbia, MD, peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at her daughter's home.
Born February 19, 1941, in Cumberland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Berthold Bauman and Helen Louise (Kane) Browne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas Defibaugh; sisters, Shirley Worthington and husband John, Betty Crothers and husband John, and Darlene Kunsman; brother-in-law, Paul Defibaugh; sister-in-law, Nancy Stark and husband, John; and nephews, Brian Robinette and wife Kelly, and Christopher Stark; nephew-in-law, Mark Seib; grandnephew, Christopher May. And she was followed in death by her nephew, Michael Defibaugh.
Suzy was a proud graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1958. She pursued her passion for caring for others, earning her nursing degree from the University of Maryland in 1963. Her dedicated career as a Registered Nurse spanned several decades and locations, reflecting her family's journeys. She served patients at various hospitals, including Holy Cross in Kensington, MD, hospitals in Northern VA, Long Beach, CA, and Philadelphia, PA, Loudoun Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Leesburg, VA, and Brynn Marr Hospital in Jacksonville, NC.
Suzy's life was a testament to love and partnership. She was married for 56 wonderful years to her high school sweetheart, the late Tommy Defibaugh. As a devoted and supportive military wife, she expertly managed moves across the country, creating a loving home wherever they landed, including Hawaii, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Delaware. Suzy loved the beach and vacationed there often since childhood. Tom and Suzy settled in Bethany Beach for sixteen years. In 2019, Suzy moved in with her daughter, Susan, and her family who lovingly cared for her. Suzy was also cared for by a very special health caregiver, Francisca Mensah, for the final three plus years of her life.
A natural caregiver, Suzy loved children deeply. In the late 1970s, she opened her home and heart to provide daycare services for several local children and again in the 1990s. She maintained a special lifelong bond with one of her charges, Sean Duffer.
In her leisure, Suzy embraced an active social life. She found joy in cooking for her family, engaging in friendly competition while playing bridge and other card games, and enjoyed bowling, walking, and playing tennis. She also had a fondness for the thrill of a good gamble. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family, who were the center of her world – especially her grandchildren.
Suzy's warmth, resilience, humor, and loving spirit will be profoundly missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and dedicated care for others.
Suzy is survived by her daughters, Susan Defibaugh and husband Innocent Okafor, and Traci Stephens and husband Yates; son, Scott Defibaugh; grandchildren, Alexander and Christopher Okafor, and Elizabeth, Shane, and Hailey Stephens; sister, Mitzie Robinette and husband Jerome; siblings-in-law, Joseph Kunsman, Joyce Brown and husband Gene, and Dixie Defibaugh; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
