ALAN W. SCHEERER

ALAN WECK SCHEERER (Age 75)  
Formerly of Manassas and most recently of Mechanicsville, VA, passed away at home on December 14, 2012. Alan was born in Fairmont, West Virginia, the 3rd of six children. He was predeceased by his wife, Laveta Warden Scheerer and his parents, Paul Jacob and Ruth Josephine Scheerer. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Scheerer Hottinger and her husband, Eddie and granddaughter, Lindsey and step-grandson, Howard of Louisa; his son, Greg Alan Scheerer and his wife, Cathy and grandchildren, Rachael, Sarah and Luke of Lynchburg; and, his son, Milton Chad Scheerer and his wife, Susan and grandchildren, Savannah, Grayson and Isabelle of Mechanicsville. He is also survived by his siblings, Philip Scheerer, Janice Mulichak, John Scheerer, Judith Lepken, and Robert Scheerer. Alan graduated from West Virginia University, where he was in the ROTC program. He was subsequently commissioned into the US Army and stationed at Ft. Polk, LA where he met his future wife. After serving 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, he and Laveta moved to Decatur, GA and later to Manassas, VA with his employment. Alan retired with over 40 years of federal service, having worked for both the US Dept of Justice and the US Dept of Education. Following his wife's too early death, Alan admirably raised his three children as a single parent. He enjoyed coaching many of his sons' soccer teams while they were growing up, and later in life became an avid genealogist - building an impressive family history database. Alan lived the last few years of his life with his son, Milt and daughter-in-law, Susan, who were his devoted caregivers. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Lasley United Methodist Church in Louisa County.
