Amoz Chernoff Obituary

CHERNOFF

AMOZ I. CHERNOFF M.D.

Amoz I. Chernoff, 100, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away peacefully at home on March 25, 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Renate F. Chernoff, his children David Chernoff (Julie Galambush), Susan Huvard (Bruce Huvard) and Judith Chernoff (Jeffrey Bernstein) and grandchildren Michael (Christine Wang) and Rachel Huvard, Daniel (Rebecca Jacobowitz) and Matthew Bernstein. Born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1923, Amoz attended Yale University and Yale University School of Medicine and received many recognitions during his extensive scientific career. Among career highlights, he served as Director of Medical Research at the University of Tennessee Memorial Research Center, Medical Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Director of the Division of Blood Diseases and Resources at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH and scientific advisor to the American Association of Blood Banks. His research interests included sickle cell disease, the co-discovery of a new hemoglobin found in thalassemia patients and extensive work to improve the safety of blood banks and transfusions. He had a lifelong love of learning, remained devoted to Jewish life, loved sudoku and crossword puzzles and devoloped a late in life passion for the cultivation of dahlia flowers, growing over 90 varieties and receiving awards for his specimens. But nothing mattered as much to him as his family and cherished wife, Renate.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, 1 p.m. at Judean Memorial Gardens Chapel, Olney, MD. Shiva to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Social Service Agency, Riderwood Jewish Community or the National Capital Dahlia Society. Arrangements entrusted to TORCHINSKY HEBREW FUNERAL HOME, 202-541-1001
