ANDREW VOGT Obituary

ANDREW JOHN HALEY VOGT
Passed away January 21, 2021 at Georgetown University Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Adam; grandson, Andrew Franklin; sister, Mary Bevoni; and brother-in-law, Thomas Bevoni. Andrew John, as he was known in his early years, was born October 7, 1943 in Pasadena, California to Ernest Jacob and Margaret Haley Vogt. His parents, who had met at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Santa Fe, New Mexico, both died young of their ailments leaving Andrew John and his sister Mary in the care of relatives. In 1950, they settled in Washington to live with their uncle, Andrew Gallagher Haley, and his family. Andrew John spent most of the 1950s in DC, attending Blessed Sacrament School in Chevy Chase. In 1957, he headed off to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire before moving on to Harvard University four years later. After graduating from Harvard in 1965, "Andy" by then, quickly resumed his studies in a Mathematics Ph.D. program at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1968, he volunteered on the Robert F. Kennedy for President campaign, where he met his wife, Barbara. In 1973 he returned to DC upon accepting a teaching position at Georgetown University, where he remained until retiring in 2014.  Andy chaired the GU Mathematics Department from 2001 to 2007 and enjoyed great friendships with his students and fellow professors. In addition to his teaching, he consulted with Pragmatics, a Northern Virginia company, where he performed quantitative analysis, such as developing accident prediction models for intersections that led to safer road designs, before focusing on the company's Quality Assurance and Internal Audit function.  Andy was also very active in his community, helping to obtain approval for conversion of the McLean Gardens rental community in Northwest DC into condos, in what was considered a major victory for tenants' rights. Additionally, he remained active and interested in politics throughout his life, spending countless hours stapling Phil Mendelson for City Council signs around light posts throughout all wards of the city.  A memorial service was held on January 30, 2021. Donations may be made in Andy Vogt's name to: Friendship Place or Classical WETA 90.9 FM.

My mother (Norma), brother (Ryan) and I met Andy, Barbara and Adam in McLean Gardens in the early 1970s when I was very young - probably 6 or 7 years old. The Vogts became our very close family friends and due to my young age in the early 1970s, I don´t remember life before Andy. In addition to being brilliant, Andy had such a kind heart, would do anything for you, and had a knack for turning any mundane activity into an adventure.

I have so many fond memories of Andy. One of my favorite memories of Andy is from my wedding in Cannon Beach. We all ended up on the beach with a large bonfire and somehow Andy got us all to recite Irish poetry until 2 a.m. Andy had such a positive and memorable impact on so many people. He is very missed.

Andy was a brilliant mathematician, but he was totally opposite to the almost autistic type so common among mathematicians. He was interested in live people perhaps even more than in abstract ideas. He was open minded without any prejudice, willing to listen and to help all kinds of people including some crazy ones. It is very difficult for me to write about him in the past tense; in my memories he is so strongly associated with DC that it is hard to believe that he is not any more physically in the city. In my eyes, he represents the best kind of an American
intellectual. I am very grateful that I had a chance to collaborate with
him and enjoy many happy friendly meetings with him, his wife Barbara and his whole family, and friends. I have learned from him a lot about
math and life, and I especially enjoyed his humor.

Andy and Barbara and I met in the early 1970s in Seattle. Since then we've shared countless Thanksgiving dinners, foreign travel, and most major life events, including each other's weddings, and the day after Adam's birth. I miss especially the early morning conversations Andy and I had before the rest of the household was up when he told me about his early boyhood in California.

Andy was a wonderful man - humorous, modest, and incredibly insightful. Though he left us so cruelly early, he remains in our hearts and we will always celebrate having known him. I am grateful to the good Lord for having leant us his presence.
