Arnold Intrater "Arnie"

2/28/1938 - 10/15/2023

Arnold "Arnie" Intrater, age 84 of Boynton Beach, FL died peacefully in his home, on Sunday, October 15, 2023.

Arnie was born on August 28, 1939 in Antwerp, Belgium to Samuel and Freida Intrater, who had themselves recently moved from Blazhov, Poland. As an infant he escaped Nazi Europe to Cuba, where his brother Kenneth was born. He attended the American school in Havana for two years, the first in the family to learn English. In 1947, he immigrated to the United States, settling in Forest Hills, NY. He graduated Yeshiva of Central Queens, Forest Hills High School, Columbia College and Columbia Law School. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Karen Adrianne Weill and they then moved to the Washington, DC area.

A true public servant, Arnie proudly served his country with dedication and integrity, quickly rising to leadership in the general counsel's office at the Treasury Department, the White House Counsel's Office, and as General Counsel at both the Peace Corps and the Federal Housing Finance Board.

Arnie loved being with his family and was an engaged, loving fun dad to son Marc (Pamela) Intrater and daughter Michelle (Joseph) Mettner and grandfather to Zachary, Jacob, and Isabel Intrater and Sara, Kelsey and Johanna Mettner.

Memorial Service, October 20, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Beth Israel, Boyton Beach, FL.

A memorial will also be held in the summer in Harpswell, ME, where he enjoyed spending many summers. Donations in Arnie's name can be made to Magen David Adom (the Israeli affiliate of International Red Cross).https://afmda.org

Arnie would treat me to lunch at the White House which was always enjoyable. He was unique being a Democrat among many Republicans. It was refreshing to know there was someone this close to the President who was there because of his skills and not because of who he knew in the incumbent party.

I just came across Arnold's obituary by chance. I have fond memories of working in his Counsel's office at the FHFB in the early 1990s. He was such a kind man and a good boss. I left the FHFB to attend graduate school in Belgium -- and never knew he was born there until reading this. May his memory be a blessing.

Arnie and I worked together in the Treasury Department and the White House counsel“s office. Arnie was someone I could always rely on for sensible and well-thought-through advice. We lost touch after I left the Reagan administration, but Arnie had that unique quality I always called sechel. May he rest in peace and in the loving memory of his family. Peter Wallison
