My condolences to Dr. Liggins' family. As a member of the McKinley Class of 75 Dr. Liggins was an inspiration to all of us. He encouraged us and in spite of the # of students at McKinley (>1500) he knew us personally and was always there to help us move up to higher points in our lives. Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

My condolences to Dr. Athelstan Q. Liggins a man of good character and integrity´s daughters who shared their father and family member, friend, educator, and overall genuinely caring person. His white shoes distinguished him from all the rest and he wore them proudly, with his smile on his face as he walked the McKinley Tech halls. Making sure you headed to your class before the bell rang. He earned his respect and love of many. Thanks for sharing an amazing well lived life. Wanda Southerland-Dailey class of 1977 best year ever!

To Sir, with Love - Athel Q. Liggins educated us kids, with care, humor, kindness and wisdom. In both my DCPS middle and high school years, I started the new school year at both institutions with a principal who soon retired or was replaced by Dr.Liggins. First at Stuart Jr.HS in 1969 and later at McKinley Tech HS in 1972. A "people" person of the highest order, Dr.Liggins encouraged, guided and inspired thousands of youngsters, their families and generations of school staffers with his vision and the warmth of his personality. He was beloved like Hilton´s schoolmaster Arthur Chipping. It has been my great honor and privilege to be handed two DCPS graduation diplomas by him. Goodbye Dr.Liggins

So, so sorry to hear of the lost of Dr. Athel Q. Liggins. He was a fair, kindhearted Principal.
Throughout my teaching career, I thought of him often, how he would engage in all student activities. As a disciplinarian, he would listen to us, not only the teachers, in order to reach a fair conclusion and an equally fair consequence. That's an important lesson I´ve carried and implemented throughout my 36 years of teaching.
Rest in Peace Dr. Liggins, know that you have inspired many.

Dr. Liggins exemplified true leadership, professionalism, and wisdom. As a student who attended McKinley Tech from 1977-1980, I respected and admired this gentle giant who served as our principal and would start off his Monday morning announcements on the PA system with "I hope that you attended the church of your choice." There aren't enough words to describe what Dr. Liggins meant to many of us, so I will simply say "thank you" for the role that you played in our lives and for representing the mighty McKinley Tech HS.

My sincere prayers and condolences to the Liggins Family. I will always cherish my memories of Dr. Liggins during my time at McKinley - 1978-80, Class 80. He was such a kind man with a heart, of gold. Caring for the welfare and educational growth of all his students. I will always remember his daily morning announcements mentioning did the students attend the church of there choice. Always supportive and uplifting. A one of a kind principal. I´m so grateful I was under his leadership and administration while at McKinley. He helped to mold my educational and professional career. For that I am truly grateful. Take your heavenly rest Dr. Liggins. You will always be in my heart and mind.

Dr. Liggins was the epitome of a gentleman and the absolute best principal any student could ever hope for. He was held in the highest regard by his students. His influence in my life began in 7th grade at Terrell and continued on through McKinley. He was elated I chose to join him at Tech (instead of going to my neighborhood school Dunbar). Almost 50 years later I´m still holding on to "the McKinley Way" you instilled in us!! Thank you, sir, for everything!
