Avyeris Andonyadis Obituary

Avyeris Christo Andonyadis, beloved son, father, grandfather and dear friend, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 29, 2025.

Avyeris was born on January 29, 1928, and educated as an architect, in Istanbul, Turkey, where he met and married his wife, Elly. They moved together, first to Athens, Greece and then to Washington, DC, where Avyeris worked with the Doxiadis Group of architects.

Avyeris became a US citizen in 1970, the same year that he joined the World Bank, traveling globally to work on health and education development projects across the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

In his retirement, he and Elly enjoyed travel, time with family, and vacations by the sea. Avyeris was devoted to family, cherishing time with his grandchildren, and as Elly's primary caregiver in the years that she lived with Alzheimer's disease. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before she died in 2017.

Avyeris is survived by his children Nephelie and Christo (Nancy), his grandchildren, Leo Korf, Theo, Claire, and Andreas Andonyadis, and his sister, Elisavi Catovic.

There will be a visitation on Wednesday, December 10 at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. held at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral located at 2815 36th Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20007. The interment will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery located at 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland 20906, immediately following the funeral service.
