BARBARA HANCOCK Obituary

BARBARA JO HANCOCK
Of Springfield, VA, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer.  Born January 26, 1937 in Fairmont WV she attended Fairmont State College. While a teacher in Annapolis she met and married Capt. James E. Hancock (USN Ret.), her husband of 54 years. They moved to Springfield in 1976 where she continued her teaching at Washington Irving Middle School, passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. Barbara and Jim have been active members and great supporters of the Army Navy Country Club for 30 years. Throughout her life and marriage she took great joy in her family; the devoted mother of James Hancock, Jr. and Joan Smedberg, the proud and loving grandmother of James Hancock III, Steven Hancock, Allison Smedberg and Erica Smedberg, and best friend and confidant of her sister Carolyn Wilbourne. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 22nd at 1:00pm at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, with a reception for friends and family at Army Navy Country Club in Arlington to follow at 2 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends can make donations to The Naval Academy Foundation, www.usna.com.

So glad we were able to visit with Barbara and Jim and some other cousins at the Stonewall Resort a few years ago. Barbara was such a happy person just like my Aunt Pauline. Jim and family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Barbara's death. I was in Beta Delta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma with her. Though I have now moved to SC I have kept in touch with that chapter and enjoyed having Barbara for a Sister in it.

JIM & fAMLY. Ken & I are so sorry to hear of Babara Jo's passing. I grew up with her as our families did lots of picnic's together. I remember Uncle Claude teaching her to drive at Morris Park in a stubaker. I also remember going to Pittsburgh to shop with Aunt Pauline , Carolyn, Barbara Jo the Xmas she & Jim had become engaged. Johnny Mathis xmas songs being played on the radio. We had a great visit with a few of the cousins at Stone Wall Jackson a couple years ago going over old memories. How wonderful we took the time to do that trip.Take care & know you are in our thoughts & prayers. Ken & Suellen Greenwalt
