Barry Schlesinger Obituary

Dr. Barry Schlesinger, of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the age of 81. He is survived by his beloved cousins, Lenore Ostrowsky and Carrie Diamond. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Otto and Rhoda Schlesinger.
Barry Schlesinger was an astrophysicist and among his other positions was a coordinator at the NASA Science Office of Standards and Technology (NOST) Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. FITS is used for the transport, analysis, and archival storage of scientific data sets.
Barry was also a long-time and very active member of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, attending and working behind the scenes at the FSGW Getaway (a weekend gathering focused on sing, playing, and learning about traditional music), the Washington Folk Festival, the FSGW Mid-Winter Festival, and many other concerts. From helping put up tents to selling tickets at the door to checking in performers, the volunteer work that he did enabled the music that he loved to continue to be heard. He also participated informally in many sign-alongs with his finger-picked guitar, singing folk tunes in Brazilian Portuguese. Barry was part of the FSGW extended family. His intelligence, wide interests, and wry humor contributed to the enjoyment that members enjoyed and they will miss him.
Services were held at Bnai Israel Cemetery, 3701 Southern Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21206, on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 3 p.m. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be sent to CureHHT, PO Box 329, Monkton, MD 21111.
