Ries

Bernard Ries (Age 89)

Bernard Ries, age 89, a retired Deputy Chief Administrative Law Judge who served with the National Labor Relations Board for more than 30 years, died of cancer on January 17, 2023.

Mr. Ries, a resident of Washington since 1961, had lived in the Chevy Chase DC area for 43 years. He was born in Norfolk, VA, and graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Thereafter, he received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. After law school, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps for three years, and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.

After leaving the Army, he was employed for three years in the Solicitor's Office of the Department of Labor and then, except for four years in private legal practice, spent the remainder of his public career with the National Labor Relations Board, from which he retired on January 3, 1997.

After retirement, Mr. Ries served as a labor arbitrator and as the Permanent Neutral member of the Local 26-IBEW contract panel. He also authored a number of articles which appeared in the op-ed, Outlook, Style, and District Extra sections of The Washington Post, and he volunteered with several charitable and educational organizations.

Mr. Ries is survived by his wife Barbara and his stepchildren Ingrid Bellack of Bend, OR, and Carla Thorson of El Cerrito, CA. Memorial services will be private.
