Bert Edwards Obituary

1937 - 2025

Bert T. Edwards, aged 88, passed away on November 30, 2025 after a lifetime in Washington, DC. In retirement, Bert made his home in Oxford, Pennsylvania.

A proud graduate of Anacostia High School, Bert earned his BA from Wesleyan University and his MBA from Stanford University. He enjoyed a successful career as a partner in Arthur Andersen & CO. before being appointed Assistant Secretary of State of Chief Financial Officer by President Clinton. Later, Bert served as Director of the Office of History Trust Accounting, where he played a pivotal role in resolving disputes to benefit Native Americans.

He was on numerous boards in Washington, including The Barker Foundation, the Population Reference Bureau, The Boys & Girls Clubs, the Historical Society of DC, The Appleseed Center, and Junior Achievement.

Bert is survived by his wife, Sue Edwards; his daughter, Stacey Leonard (husband Jim); three grandchildren, James Leonard, Sarah Shepard (husband Nick), and Morgan Gauthier (husband Alex); and two great-grandchildren, William Shepard and Benjamin Gauthier.

He was predeceased by his son, Christopher Edwards.

A memorial service will be held at Vista Ridge Auditorium at Ware Presbyterian Village, 7 E. Locust St., Oxford, on December 13 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be sent to The Barker Foundation, 7979 Old Georgetown Rd., First Floor, Bethesda, MD 20814.
