BRUCE M. BROWNELL
BRUCE M. BROWNELL, 57, philanthropist and builder, died unexpectedly May 21, 2004 at his home in Bluemont, VA. Mr. Brownell set the standard for all of Loudoun County through his work as a builder and preservationist. His work began with Colvin's Glen in Great Falls where old log cabins were salvaged and rebuilt within a new home, winning him many awards and accolades.
In 1980 he renovated Tuscarora Mill, having moved it from its prior location to become what is now Market Station in Leesburg. Among his many accomplishments were the renovation of the Contee Adams Seed Mill in Purcellville, Stoneleigh Golf Club in Round Hill, The Courts of St. Francis in Purcellville and most recently, the renovation of Adams Mill, home to the new "Magnolia's Restaurant."
Mr. Brownell was often found "holding court" in his woodshop at his residence, creating pieces of art from salvaged wood he had found throughout the country. He was a true artist with a mind for business, putting several major landmarks in Loudoun communities "on the map" with his vision and hands-on expertise.
He was a best friend to many and admired by hundreds more. His passions included woodworking, traveling the world by bicycle or motorcycle, learning about other cultures and, most importantly, friendships.
Mr. Brownell graduated from Loudoun Valley High School and attended State University of New York. He is survived by his parents James F. and Zora "Mac" Brownell of Purcellville; his wife Wenesday "Sam" Brownell; his three brothers James (Patty), Mark (Jackie) and Scott (Sally); his children Jason Brownell (Rachel) and Kelly Ensor; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan, in 1972.
Memorial services will be held at Whitehall Farm in Bluemont on Wednesday, June 2 at 6 p.m. Interment private. Contributions may be made to The "Bruce M. Brownell Memorial Fund" which shall be used to support special community projects in the Purcellville area, such as The Carver Center and other preservation and restoration projects c/o "The Bruce M. To the Family and Friends of Bruce Brownell,
When Bruce started in the building business we were in the brokerage business and were pleased and astounded by his presentation of his products in Colvin Glen.
My wife and I have always admired the attention to the detail of the buildings he built and the land on which the buildings were situated.
He had the midas touch and we are honored to have known him.
Our deepest sympathy to all who knew and loved him.
Sincerely,
Fred Spain
