Bruce Morgan Obituary

morgan Bruce R. Morgan, (74) Of Northwest Washington, DC died peacefully on October 14, 2007 at Georgetown Hospital in the arms of his family. An unconventional man and innovative thinker, he will be remembered as a risk taker, compassionate leader, and true family man. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Sacramento, California, Mr. Morgan earned B.S. and L.L.B. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, where he served as Editor, California State Bar Journal, Legislative Review. Following his graduation from Berkeley‘s Boalt Hall School of Law, he married Bette Jeanne Moore in 1957. Mr. Morgan served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1961 (1st Lieutenant, later Captain) as Staff Judge Advocate in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and Casablanca, Morocco. Bruce and Bette returned to California in 1961 where Bruce entered private practice with the firm of Thelen, Marrin, Johnson & Bridges in San Francisco. He served as a corporate and taxation attorney for seven years, then left law practice to serve as Deputy Director, then Director, U.S. Peace Corps in Kathmandu, Nepal from 1967 to 1970. As Country Director he was responsible for a program with an average of 225 Volunteers working in agriculture, civil development and engineering, and education. Bruce returned to the U.S. with his family and settled in Denver, Colorado where he served as Executive Director, Center for Research and Education, a non-profit company working primarily in cross-cultural research and training, from 1971 to 1975. In 1975 he was recruited back to government service to serve as the first Director of the U.S. Representation to the U.S. - Saudi Arabian Joint Economic Commission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the Commission was to help national development (the Saudi emphasis) and to recycle that country‘s huge petro-dollar surplus (the primary U.S. Government motivation). In 1976 Bruce founded Morgan-Newman Associates, Inc. (later Bruce Morgan Associates), a consulting firm providing economic, industrial and technical analyses, information, research, and other assistance to foreign public- and private-sector clients. He has been serving as CEO of BMA since 1976. Bruce Morgan is survived by his best friend and wife of 50 years, Bette, with whom he raised three children, Michael Morgan of Chantilly, Virginia, Brian Morgan of Dallas, Texas and Jeanne Morgan Cashin of Silver Spring, Maryland. He is also survived by his mother, Rose Morgan, 98 years, his two brothers and sister, and six remarkable grandchildren. Services are private.

Dear Brian, Jeanne, Mike, & Ms. Morgan,

I was real sorry to hear about Mr. Morgan's passing. I had a lot of respect for him and enjoyed his company very much. He had a pretty solid grip on the teenagers of our time which was pretty impressive in retrospect as most of our parents really had no idea what we were going through as kids. Truly a great person who loved his family very much. I lost my father whom I also loved and respected very much in September of 1999 and it was a very difficult thing for me to handle, I appreciate what you are going through and grieve with you. Please call me if you would like, it would be great to hear from you. I can be reached for the next month at 434-581-2323. Email is [email protected].
All my best,
Robert Acuff

Brian and Jeanne:

I remember your Dad from our high school days. He was always terrific to all the kids that seemed to inhabit your home. My thoughts are with you.

To the Morgan family,
I worked for Bruce at Morgan Newman Associates from 1980 to 1985 on K Street and have very fond memories of Bruce, the company, and his fish tank.
He was an inspiring leader, especially in his emphasis that everyone, no matter what their job, was a valuable member of the team and in his committment to development work.
I left the firm to go backpacking in Asia -- and have stayed on this side of the world -- but carried the lessons I learned at Morgan Newman with me ever since.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
