Caroline Banta Obituary

Caroline Banta, long time teacher at Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025. She was originally from Louisville, Kentucky, and moved to Washington, DC, in the early 1960s, where she started teaching, met her husband Henry Banta, and raised her family. She and Henry were married in 1966 and remained married until his passing in December 2024.
When she first moved to DC, Caroline taught at St. Anne's Catholic School at Tenley Circle. After taking time to raise her young children, she returned to teach at Annunciation, and then moved to Blessed Sacrament School in DC where she taught for more than 20 years until her retirement. She taught a variety of subjects, but her true love was teaching honors 7th-grade math.
After retiring from full-time teaching, Caroline continued working with students by tutoring at the Washington School for Girls. Outside of her work, Caroline stayed active throughout her life. She enjoyed running and taking long walks. In her younger years, she was an enthusiastic ballet dancer, something she looked back on fondly. She and Henry traveled frequently and particularly enjoyed visiting Paris and summer trips to Mallorca.
She is survived by her son, Matthew Banta, his wife Nara; and granddaughter Saran, and her daughter, Maureen Banta, her husband Brian Crowley; and grandchildren, Madeline and Bebhinn.
A Catholic Funeral will be held Monday, December 29, 2025 at 11 a.m. at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada St NW, Washington, DC 20015.
She will be missed by family, friends, and former students.
