Charles Butta Obituary

Fr. Charles Gregory Butta, recently of Brookeville, MD, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, where he was in hospice care. He was born to Charley Butta and Florence (Cullen) Butta in Herrin, Illinois on July 26, 1947. Fr. Butta is survived by his sister, Kathleen, and his brother, Christopher. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest on July 6, 1991, and served in many parishes in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, including as Pastor of St. Francis Xavier in Washington, DC and as Director to both the Cardinal O'Boyle Residence in Washington, DC and St. John XXIII Retirement Residence in Hyattsville, MD. A viewing will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 619 Tenth Street NW (at G Street), Washington, DC, on Wednesday, June 4, from 3 to 7 p.m., with the Vigil Mass celebrated at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered there on Thursday, June 5, at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at a later date at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in West Frankfort, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church in Washington, DC, St. Francis Xavier in Washington, DC, or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in West Frankfort, IL, or to your favorite charity in Fr. Gregory's memory.
