Dear Ann, Holly, Courtney and Kelly,
Just heard the news. So many memories of our childhood together, at Fenwick Island, and of the Schwartz and Hobbs families get togethers on our deck at Huntington St. and at your house in Chevy Chase. Even though we have not remained closely connected, this sad sad loss just makes me realize how much your dad and your family were simply part of the fabric of our childhood. I've always loved seeing your dad at all the major milestones, my dad's "0" and "5" birthdays, at my mom's shows, and then at my dad's memorial service and Arlington Cemetery event. I grieve with you. Love, Dianne Schwartz

Charlie was an inspiration and guide to me, as a young Navajo lawyer who stepped foot into his firm in the summer of 1988 as a law clerk. Over the years he not only shared his wisdom and famous writing style with me but also his kind, measured, and sincere approach to staff, associates, and partners alike. His leaves a legacy as a pioneer and passionate fighter for Indian tribes and Indian Country is grateful for all that he brought to the world.

Charlie was one of the finest lawyers practicing Indian law that I have ever had the pleasure and honor to meet and work with. Not only was he a great lawyer but also he was the consummate gentleman. He will be greatly missed.

I first met Charlie professionally when I was engaged by him and his law firm to represent them when they moved from their office on H Street to their current location. Over the years I handled other legal matters for him. We became friends and had lunch together on a regular basis. He was the perfect gentleman and scholar. And he was an incredibly talented and competent attorney. He will be sorely missed. Mark G. Griffin, Washington, DC

Ann,
I have such good memories of your father - especially out on the Boston Whaler at the beach! Having lost my parents I know there will always be a great sense of loss, but try to keep the good memories alive - that helps me get through each day. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and we are here if you need anything!

Charlie was a special person. He was kind, insightful, talented and humerous. He was Chief Justice Burger's favorite law clerk, of many.

To Charlie's family: I was blessed and honored to have worked with Charlie for the past 15 years. He was a brilliant lawyer, and, even more important, a wonderful human being. He was a great mentor and role model for those of us trying to do the kind of work that he dedicated his life and career to doing. I will miss Charlie's presence. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this sad time.

Charlie was an amazing man who accomplished amazing things in his long and illustrious life. He was a kind and gentle soul and an inspiration to those who knew him. I was lucky enough to have worked with him for the past 15 years and to answer any and all of his myriad of computer questions. His passing is a loss for us all, but none more so than his remaining family. I will always cherish my memories of this amazing man and his kind, gentle smile.

Ann, Courtney, Holly, and Kelly -- Our hearts grieve with you at the loss of your father, an extraordinary man and role model in every respect -- father, brother, colleague, friend to so many, and beloved "Uncle Charlie" to my family, our children, and our cousins. We will miss him terribly, but are so thankful for your father, and your beloved mother, and the legacy and impact their lives have had on our own, and on the lives of so many who were blessed to know them. Our love and heartfelt prayers for each one of you.
